Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Thinking about Gramsci: Am I a captive of Bourgeois Thought?

Yesterday's handy summary of Gramsci put me ta thinkin'. I realized that when I am in the mood to be appalled by a pure strong dose of Gramsci thought, I check out what insanity our friend Van Helsing at Moonbattery has to offer.


Top of his blog right now - Bloomberg compares US in Iraq to Brits during the Revolution. Perfect Gramscian confusion. The amoral elements of New York love to create moral equivalents because it makes them feel sophisticated. Of course, Bloomberg is the embodiment of the intrusive Nanny State too: it's miraculous that he is one of the world's most successful and exuberant Capitalists.


And then next I happened to stop by David Warren for my weekly visit and read Reconstructing the Family. Yes, it's about Gramsci again.


This stuff is everywhere. Am I a victim, a pitiful captive of counter-revolutionary Bourgeois Thought which causes me to believe that this stuff is utter, malevolent nonsense designed to mess with your mind?

As you continue your reflections upon evil, you may wish to toss in some Gramscian icons along the way. John Dewey might make a nice starting point. Education is certainly very deeply infected with Gramscian rot and Dewey was definitely a Typhoid Harry in its spread.

The Boomers had the misfortune to be the first generation to have had most of their teachers indoctrinated with Dewey's drivel. The need to augment staff that began with the Kindergarten class of 1951 changed the complexion (in urban centers, at least) from light blush to beet red over the next 25 years. Hollywood had gone red almost from inception (with a very strong Soviet push in the '30's) but I rate the march through the schools as being more pernicious.

"exhuberant Capitalist"= businessman ex-hubby?

This Gramscian talk and personal whackiness have startled some of us naifs into thinking how later in life partnerships are fraught with moral- economic peril that could squander trust, faith, hope, morale, community, portfolio and children’s inheritance, especially when one partner always seems to “win” more than the other. It’s bad when you have to trust your attorneys to secure interests more than a current love-lust interest that goes up and down and all around with fights and manipulations.

Re that Reconstructing the Family article: Living together doesn’t set a good example for the grandkids, but neither do other activities old supposed moral/conservative adolescents indulge these days, and at least it keeps one’s assets more intact.

David Warren has some tremendous sentences in that piece--worthy reading just for the writing, even if the thoughts themselves weren't of rather colossal import (which they are).

Unringing a bell is a tough job. Especially with so many pols being willing participants in the billionaire's looters club that is taking advantage of the intellectual's inability to discern the obvious.

You said it, Rick. Though it's a crying shame that it is so, it would be far worse if public trust in government wasn't plummeting. Atonement can't be pleasant, that's not the way it works.

In my opinion Gramsci can be treated as an incredibly successful 5GW warrior against western civilization including the US. Who could have imagined that Gramsci's program based on elevating muslims, transsexuals, felons, insane people, psychopaths, fifty-year-old college students, racial minorities, and homosexuals into privileged victim classes in an inverted apartheid system would have succeeded as well as it has.
