From Gates of Vienna:

On this day in 1683 King Jan Sobieski of Poland arrived at Vienna to break the siege of the Turks and rescue the Christian West from the Hosts of Mohammed. The rout of the Ottoman troops before the gates of Vienna by the Polish hussars gave us a little breathing room, a coffee-and-croissants break that lasted for the next three hundred and eighteen years.

The Battle of Vienna in which King Sobieski defeated the 100,000-man army of "Islamic hordes" under Kara Mustafa Pasha was one day after the arrival of the Polish army with their winged hussars - Sept. 12. The western expansion of the Caliphate ended there, but the push back took many years.

Many of us are insufficiently grateful. The Muslims remember being driven out of Spain--in 1492--and are severely p.o.ed to this day.

For this act alone, the Poles should be revered by the entire West. I had forgotten this, but never shall again.

The West went to war for Poland in 1939 and then sold them down the river to the Reds six years later.

They deserved much, much better.

Churchill would have been in no position to do a damn thing. Britain was bankrupt and Americans were tired of losing their sons overseas.
Unfortunately, Poland is located between two chronically bellicose countries.

Churchill was opposed to it at Yalta - where FDR handed Eastern Europe over to Uncle Joe. Not a thing he could do about it and FDR wasn't listening.

This story would make a great movie. Unfortunately there are no Americans in it. Between that and showing Muslims in a bad light, Hollywood would have no interest in it.

Reminds me that American screenwriter and Communist Party USA member Dalton Trumbo boasted to the The Worker [a Communist newspaper] that party members in the film industry had prevented Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon, among other anti-Stalinist books, from being produced into a Hollywood movie.

In 1612, the Poles with their Hussars fought the Russians. They did make that movie - which I'm trying to find.
