Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Winds of War

Are the things going on in the ME now mere bullying, or for internal consumption for political purposes - or true threats of war? From Winds of War by Muravchik in Opinion Journal:

Several conflicts of various intensities are raging in the Middle East. But a bigger war, involving more states--Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, the Palestinian Authority and perhaps the United States and others--is growing more likely every day, beckoned by the sense that America and Israel are in retreat and that radical Islam is ascending.

I damn sure hope we have a big ole get this thing settled fight.

Israel will be forced to go nuclear, we'll follow, Russian will use a proxy to launch their nuke or nukes.

Israel will not go down without unloading on all those who have made war on her since 1948. Syria,Egypt,Jordan,Iraq,Iran.

I'm skeptical. In 1990, I was on my way to Desert Shield - I knew we would be fighting Iraq (that was a no-brainer). At the time, I was convinced we would end up in Afghanistan and / or Iran as well - maybe the whole region and / or the Russians would end up on one side or the other of a big fight.

Six months later, I was shocked to be home on terminal leave from active duty.

As deep as our Army has been cut since 1990, to face American or Israeli forces on an open battlefield is to die.

That was a pretty thin line, there for awhile--Desert Shield, between KSA and that Baath army in Kuwait and itchin' to go for more. But it worked! Good going, NJS!

Right--that's a long, long time in today's world. As always for our deployed troops, we owe 'em a huge unpayable debt of gratitude.
