We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
What is "for the duration" with an enemy who sees war in terms of centuries? Neoneo
So many peoplerunning for Pres. We remain undecided: It's either George Papoon or Pogo.
CIA will reveal the family jewels. Bad idea. No sane country would do that.
"Could it be that Americans are just so aspirationally oriented that nothing is ever good enough?" Don Luskin
Polar ice-melt is a natural cycle. Scotsman (h/t, Synthstuff). Also, tropical frogs are the canaries in the coal mine? Call me a skeptic, but not the CSM. Also, the heat will kill Parisians. The more hysterical this stuff gets, the less people give it credence.
The power of wealth creation to produce net value is extraordinary. Most of America's poor are already among the best-off of all humans in world history. We should be putting our resources, including our advocacy and our intellectual resources, into wealth creation as much as we can.
I was in my second or third year in the CIA when William Colby, then DCI (Director of Central Intelligence) was forced to testify before the Church Committee on CIA operations. Colby gave up "the family jewels" much to the consternation of many old OSS hands who were still around.
Up until that time (Watergate ) the Company was like a club. Then one day a memo came down from DCI to the effect that if you had ever been involved in an operation that in lightof the current congressional mood and investigations might be considererd illegal....go get your own attorney cause we can't help ya. Honest story.
The morale and espirit de corps vanished overnight and the Company was never the same again. For a while it was the greatest place in the world to be for a young adventerous man. But one thing you never could afford to do was forget for an instant that it was totally hardball and totally unforgiving if you got caught.
I traveled on all the globes continents and Ivan could never catch me but there were some moments.
Now people join to get in a few years and write a book. It's shit.
Re: 'Half-decent bi's, for a tennis player.'
heh. So. Lame. Sorry NJ, but you are not very good at waxing poetic about men. Might have to cut NJ some slack opie as it is just not happening. There is no way he has it in him. Maybe that is 'a good thing'.
NJ, I hear Maggie. Is. Brutal. So I also want to say how good the site is. I am biased but I think the talent is obvious and the creative effort can stand with the best. It is a customized magazine, a bit experimental, a kind of first. I suppose the internet will 'consolidate' but that might take a little time. Meanwhile, has been fun to watch new technology unfold even when it is a distraction/habit. This site has a good team. Thank you BD, NJ, The Barrister, Dr. Joy and everyone else who takes the time and makes an effort. You all do a really good job.
