Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Dr. Sanity has a piece today - Showdown at the OK Corral - which perfectly captures the current Moslem-West showdown which is happening at this very moment.

She is absolutely correct that weakness and doubt in the face of Moslem hostility only brings on more. It's like blood in the water. As she says, "They aren't like us." No, they are in a different culture with different rules - if you want to call them rules. We call them dishonorable and uncivilized, but they do not see it that way.

I am not going to quote it. Just do me a favor and read her piece.

Good piece. They are not like us, I'm beginning to think they're a different species. They seem to have an unlimited supply of suicide bombers. Any attempts at appeasement or even negotiation is seen as weakness. The "middle east peace talks" have been going on for fifty years or more. You can't impose a political solution on a religious problem.

I was in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in 1990 - 1991. Before Desert Storm we got dirty suspicious looks. After the war, smiles, waves and warm welcomes.

They respect strength and despise weakness. When the Brits try to use UN pronouncements to pressure Iran, they demonstrate weakness and invite more violence.

I believe Iran specifically targeted British Sailors. They knew the American and even the Australian response would be strong - very strong.

Yes, the contempt for weakness causes them to misinterpret good intentions.
