We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Anti-Americanism

Everybody is linking to this piece, Protector of the Free World Deserves Better, by Albrechtson in the Australian. One quote:

Anti-Americanism has less to do with US politics and policies and more to do with what Markovits calls the "perfectly respectable human need to hate the big guy". Half a century ago, Hannah Arendt commented on the same psychology of mistrust aimed at the US. It was, she said, the inevitable plight of the big, rich guy to be alternately flattered and abused, remaining unpopular no matter how generous they were.

So will they love us if our economy shrinks towards the catastrophe of France, and we shut down our military? And why should we care? Those arrogant Europeans should be reading Maggie's if they want to learn about evil, ignorant, uncivilized, oafish, boorish, disgusting Americans.

Wrote this last night in the wee hours after reading about China,Russia, and India "counter weight to the USA" pact.

NJ..thanks for placing the Norwegians comment from the No Pasaran in this thread. I wish I'd read it before 00:53 on the 15th...none the less it was good.

As you might be aware I've been peeking every so often at "the Scotsman" a leftest Scotttish publication. I've tried to educate them to the fact that without US help most of the world would be in servitutde but they resist like crazy. The standard socialist crap cpmes up along with huge gops of totally off the point remarks.
As relected in the comments of the No Pasaran I think we Americans have about had our fill of Europe, and I think it is reciprocated from all I read in European newspapers.
Now the Indians,Russians , and Chinese are chumming up .
We're gonna have our hands full of T_R_O_U_B_L_E soon. We need the base closeures to end, the Rumfeld docrtine of fast and mobile to be tabled or depressed in favor of a 600 ship Navy and another 500,00 men under arms.
As I stated in another post somewhere on this site NATO is a joke, The UN a joke, and we have no allies with any power projection capabilities. Meanwhile I see no breathing space from the south,Europe or Asia. We are basically now alone. The world has basically turned against the only force for good on the planet..it is astonishing to me.

I also wrote a nice thank you note to the Aussie reporterette who defended us.
BTW, the Australians have been the only country to fight with us in all our engagements.
I lived in Australia for almost a year. Deep in the outback at Alice Springs with many trips to Melbourne and Sydney as well as up to Darwin. It is a fascinating country with great people.
If you get a chance make sure to see the movie, "On the Beach" from the book by Neville Shute. Great plot. Acting done by Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins.
Stanley Kramer's 1959 antiwar movie looks like everything Kramer did: subtle as a car wreck but undeniably affecting. Gregory Peck plays a submarine commander looking for survivors in Australia after a nuclear holocaust. Ava Gardner is among them and, somewhat improbably under the circumstances, becomes his love interest. Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins are among the characters awaiting death from the gradual spread of radiation from the north. One might scoff at Kramer's implicit finger-wagging about nuclear politics in this mad, mad, mad, mad world, but it is hard to stop watching this compelling drama all the same....I'm definitely not anti war but it was a good flick

The WOT will be a long, long war. We must not despair just yet. After 9/11 the USA seemed to me to be like the alpha male of the dog pack, who was bloodied after suffering a grievious attack, and the rest of the pack turned. I expected it, but the USA is still the big dog and the ankle bitters will not prevail. Russia and India and China have very serious problems of their own that they will have to address. I hope they have neither the resources nor the will to ever do lasting damage to the USA.

Also, Canada may not project a large military power but Canada will provide continued cover and assistance and resources. And Canada is also becoming an energy super power. America could be too if the enviros would let Americans explore and develop their own oil and oil shale and coal, etc. but I doubt the people of Colorado would ever allow industries like the ones now located in Fort MacMurray, Alberta. NA is huge and wealthy and though there are two countries, in many, many ways the blood ties throughout Canada and America run so deep, there is only one people. My personal belief and hope and prayer is that no one will ever be able to overun or occupy or conquer the free peoples of the USA or Canada, except of course, our own polticos, and we freely give them that opportunity.
