Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Why is Western Europe anti-American? No Pasaran. Honestly, I don't really care why or whether, but I guess it's a bit of a puzzle, since we've saved their asses several times, and even today save them the trouble of maintaining serious militaries. I have a thought of my own, a basic thought about human nature: The given-to always resent the giver, just as recipients of charity must always hate the charitable. It's a matter of maintaining pride, or, you might say, vanity. Charity is a joy for the giver, but a humiliation for the recipient. Pelosi's Tahoe breaks Maggie's Rule of Global Warming. NJ, about Western Europe, it's partly what you say about people resenting charity. But it's also that they have lived thru occupations, invasions, bombings of their homelands and seen many more of their civilian population killed, executed, imprisoned, maimed, tortured, etc. as a result of war than we have and so they are terrified of any actions we take that might lead to war again. I went to school in a building that had had half turned to dust by a WWII bomb.
There's an element of envy of America's relative immunity from such civilian suffering. And envy of our prosperity and space and natural resources and opportunities. Also, we Americans are so rightly proud of God's country that we have often been boorish abroad. The ugly American syndrome is real. People who have lived amongst us want to stay, but those who observe American tourists and rapacious corporate types abroad are repelled. When our family lived abroad, we went to the schools of the country, kept quiet about our American opinions, learned the language and showed respect for the culture and values of the country we were a guest in. I don't mean to sound self-righteous, unpatriotic. The more I saw of other country's political and economic systems, the more I yearned to return home. But we Americans are not always good advertisements for our beloved country abroad. We are perceived as arrogant, ignorant, clumsy, greedy. It's analagous to the way evangelical Christians are often despised by the godless. Get to know the former, and you join them. But the initial impression is often negative. So where do they get off comparing the worst of us with the most refined of them?
How about if you compare me to the residents of the banlieues? No contest, NJ. I'd rather be in a lifeboat with you any day. It maddened me during years of exile that the highest compliment somebody would pay me would be to say "You know, you'd never guess you were a Yank!" GRRRRRR
The point is not that they are right to be anti-American, but to be like Caesar's wife. For another analogy, when working in youth in a predominantly male profession, I was exasperated by the automatic negative assumptions made about me because of my gender. Not being a rabid feminist or PC twit, I didn't have a support group of the like minded to run to every time somebody assumed that my response to a challenge would be emotional, feeble-minded, irrational, etc. I just wanted to do my job. So I just worked hard, developed a thick skin, was exceptionally polite to my enemies, turned the other cheek, and used a lot of humor. You just can't let prejudice and envy get to you. None of us do the right thing, as individuals or as a nation, to be popular. We do it because we are responding to a call higher than our limited individual sinful selves. As I tediously remind myself, when discouraged, Jesus cares more about our struggles to be holy, to carry out the tasks set us by God, not our personal happiness or popularity. Even our D of I talks about "the pursuit of happiness" rather than the possession of it. Virtue is its own reward. Not in the sense of hoarding a sense of our own superiority (tho that is such a sinfully pleasant feeling) but in the sense that aligning oneself with the God's will, faithfulness to country, family, etc. is the only true freedom and peace to be found on this earth. Forgive the preachiness, please. On my way to work. My kids are appalled by my one handed Crackberry writing...All I mean to say, is that you are worth ten of the anti-American critics. But that is why you must not lose sleep over their hostility. Draw comfort from your gospels. The light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not. We have always been a city on a hill. A visible target. "...we Americans are so rightly proud of God's country..."
I thought God loved every human. Not just Americans. I started from the bottom of the blog and worked up. I think I need to go slit my wrists now. Thank you. We're here to help. I know a discreet doctor who could assist. Swiss....
Einstien and relativity. Hobbes.Aristotle. They all talked of relativity, some in different ways. Most all, if not all, of the devistating European wars were of their making. They were tribal and intent on hegemony over one another. Britian et. al. colonized the known world. None of that was the fault of the United States.
The Europeans are fond of pointing out that the US entered both WWI and WWII after the issues were decided. Of course that is patently false and had we not entered we'd all be speaking German. The fact is we greatly desired to stay out of the muck they so ernestly developed decade after decade. We saved Europe from despotism on more than one occasion and have provided cover for them ever since the end of WWII. For this we initially were thanked by the WWII generation, with the exception of the Gauls who are insulting and ethnocentric beyond words.. It is no small thing to be mindful that we started none of their wars, but did finish them when they could not. We did not go on to establish an empire of territory. We gave back their territory AFTER rebuilding it, something unheard of in the history of mankind. Their thanks was to adopt, because of our military umbrella, socialism, which we know eventually kills the will and the soul. Now sixty years after the last world war Europe is all but done. We are moving in that direction. Our political system has been prostituted, our constitution distorted by hte courts into such a malleable istrument as to be at the whim of whichever five concordant opininions are in vogue at the time, The court claims stare decisis as their guide but have contravened that dictum since Marbury v. Madison established judicial review. (you're starting to ramble, lets bring in the dancing bear and get this buttoned up..enter dancing bear). So that's our really big show. (bear doing twirls in the background) Surefire:
How silly of you. Everybody knows that God only loves Americans. And only propsperous white Protestant Americans who drink Scotch and play golf, or so it is said. It's in the Bible somewhere, I think. Maybe it's in the DARPP-32 ?

NJ is correct. God is OUR Big Guy. The remainder of the world was given the "SPIRIT OF ECSTASY" "The Flying Lady", The Rolls Royce hood ornament, The Spirit of Ecstasy is one of the most well known motor car mascot in the world. It was actually a pretty good trade. Even the godless commies worst dude, the notorious Cheka chief, Felix Dzerzhinsky drove a Rolls and had a passion for the car. So now in secret enclaves around the world people bow wow, ah down to the "Flying Lady" Hey, it beats a golden calf. For a few years in the 1950's and early 1960's the Texaco Star and Dinah Shore began to make inroads inot the worship of the "Flying Lady"...I mean she could only fly, but a Star is a celestial wonder....and Dinah ..well she held onto youth long enough to get Burt Reynolds to do ...... her "favors" See Americans aren't stupid, well alot of Americans are but, ok I labor that, but we picked THE BIG GUY because we knew all about "Flying Ladies" from Icarus. Now he was no lady but he did fly, wings melted by the Sun and splat. So why but your money on a dame? So to sum it up (cheers rising from the readership as the peroration begins), from your commie to the Norman Lear(All in the Family, and commie) the Flying Lady does them just fine..but our juju is stronger. Ok bring back the dancing bear. Just to fill in some of the above comments on the Dinah-Burt thing. It is believed he was smittened by the lyrics of an old song and what they portend. Goes like this.
I've been working on a screen play All the live-long day I've been working on the screen play Just to pass the time away Can't you hear the whiskey flow'in Fill up so early in the morn Can't you hear the member shouting Dinah, blow my horn Dinah, won't you blow Dinah, won't you blow Dinah, won't you blow my horn Dinah, won't you blow Dinah, won't you blow Dinah, won't you blow my horn Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah Someone's in the kitchen gett'n Din-ah-mited Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah Strumming on my old banjo, and sing'in Fie, fi, fiddly i o Fie, fi, fiddly i o Fie, fi, fiddly i o Strumming on my old banjo Anyway, that's the Hollywood Rob insider scoop!! Wasn't there a posting a while back on straw men?!
In any case, God loves everyone. American, Iraqi, EUropean and bickering commentators on blogs... Our nation was founded, whether you like it or not, by people who believed it was their mission to a show a wicked world a better way. I have Red Indian as well as Puritan blood in me, and I know which I am more proud of... The Puritan settlers were well aware of their own sinfulness but acted anyway, trying to build a new Jerusalem. Sneer if you like, but they were gutsy to leave a degenerate Europe. It serves us ill today, tho, to trash our relatives there. They are still family. And it's a dirty bird that fouls its own nest. You can jeer at that Puritan sense of mission--perhaps your ancestors came over later, or were dragged over in chains and have no stake in it. It's your right in this free society to be cynical and snicker at whatever you please, even if it is courage and faith and vision that put us to shame. Incidentally, I am poor, do not drink Scotch, loathe golf , and doubt any club would want me. I could care less what religion or race a person is so long as they love GOd and their neighbor, and can make me laugh. When I write so clumsily about America having a special call, unique responsibilities in the world, I am not talking about club membership. Easy to demolish my opinions, I have to leave it to the underemployed or coupon clippers to have the time to polish their ramblings. I absolutely agree with the stuff Habu writes about Europe expecting us to clean up their mess, and our natural desire to stay out of it all. But we cannot stay isolated, much as we might like to. The old folkie "I've Been Workin on a Railroad" melody is used in the University of Texas school song, "The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You" (written in 1903). You can hear it here:
http://lhb.music.utexas.edu/sounds/ MR Buddy Larsen,
What a whitebread name you cracker. That rascist Texas fight song is rally about those white pig presidents the bushes. It should be "The Lies of Texas are Upon You" read my lips ...no new taxes read my lips ..we will not negotitate with terrorists. well how the hell did that Oreo sista give a terrorist organization in palestine so many m-16's while they took away the brothers and sisters guns in New Orleans? dam crackers Mohammad X I read the Anti-American links yesterday. In the end, it's a change of subject ploy. "We killed Jews, well you killed Indians," "we invaded Poland, you invaded Iraq," etc...
It is a game of moral equivalence. Dear Mr X,
Appreciate memo in regards to crackers and Oreos. Would love to hear ideas on other bakery snack foods, at yr convenience. "We invaded Poland." Wait a minute. What?
The f-ing Normans invaded us. We never bothered them. Is there no memory anymore? They just wanted to get on the Labour Party dole - they wanted a free ride and a good deal and multicultural tolerance. And before that the f-ing reindeer Viking idiots with horns on their heads, looking for fresh girlies to ravish. Did we ever bother them? No. I chunder in their general direction. And I double-chunder towards the Normans, and then blow my nose at them. Organ-meat-eating fools! But, Willie, you ARE a Norman. In fact, you are THE Norman. Have you held council in your Ale-house again?
Too much sweet mead. Almost forgot meself. Cor, blimey.
L'etat, c'est moi and all that. Allons enfants de la patrie, la jour de gloire est sauvignon rouge, or something. Hating America is certainly not new. America and the ideals and ideas of America have almost always been a threat to other countries and cultures. There is a book called Hating America that details some of the history. Here is an edited snip from a review of that book on Amazon.
The current animus directed at the U.S. as imperialist power and capitalist world dominator is nothing new. In the eighteenth century, the American territory was considered wild and barbaric. In the early to mid-nineteenth century, the American experiment in social equality was seen as a failed society. With its growing strength and presence at the end of the nineteenth century leading up to World War II, U.S. democracy was feared as a threat to less democratic nations. From the end of WWII through the end of the cold war, criticism of the U.S. shifted from its potential to its actual domination in world affairs. The latest stage encompasses a visceral reaction to American assertion of its politics, economics, and culture. >In any case, God loves everyone.
What about those who don’t believe in him? But they do get a chance on their deathbed, right? >and bickering commentators on blogs... What about those who bicker only with themselves but want the world to hear it? > ...whether you like it or not... Who are you challenging here? Me? Why? >I have Red Indian as well as Puritan blood in me... Is it not un-PC to use ‘red’ in this reference. Shouldn’t that be American Indian? >I know which I am more proud of... Okay. Since you merely hinted.... As you are not a blue-blood, the America Indians? >I could care less what religion or race a person is so long as they love GOd and their neighbor, and can make me laugh. I’ll assume you meant to say: “I could NOT care less...” At any rate, would two out of three work for your affections? :) >I have to leave it to the underemployed or coupon clippers to have the time to polish their ramblings. Are you insulting all the commenters here? I don’t understand this. Just a final thought: Why all the talk of personal sinfulness? I have something for you. . RELIGION
I am no priest of crooks nor creeds. For human wants and human needs Are more to me than prophets’ deeds; And human tears and human cares Affect me more than human prayers. Go, cease your wail, lugubrious saint! You fret high Heaven with your plaint. Is this the “Christian’s joy” you paint? Is this the Christian’s boasted bliss? Avails your faith no more than this? Take up your arms, come out with me, Let Heaven alone; humanity Needs more and Heaven less from thee. With pity for mankind look ‘round; Help them to rise - and Heaven is found. Paul Lawrence Dunbar . Surefire, you need to calm down. You called yourself something else last week, but your tone is still manic and hostile. Take your lithium, stop drinking, chill, buy a dog or cat so you have somebody to love, go to church and try listening and praying instead of ranting against people of faith, do whatever you need to do to to feel better about yourself, but stop flaming me. It is completely childish and unnecessary. If you are in therapy, try and figure out there why you need to attack me, point by point. But leave me alone. I have not harmed you, there is nothing of yours that I am interested in taking, and to rant at me is just bizarre. I am a complete stranger, you will never meeet me, and it is pointless for you to try and make me feel bad.
God is so much bigger than you are, but it seems that He frightens you. I pity you, tho I know you do not want my pity. People are so much more complicated than you presently understand them to be. By the way, since I have Red Indian blood in my veins I can call it whatever I please. I have no use for PC talk of any kind. It's my blood. I was not insulting other commenters here, by saying I didn't have unlimited time to edit my comments. I was making the point that, as someone with a full time job, family, kids, and multiple community responsibilities, I have little time to polish and hone posts to a blog that , until becoming the brunt of your attacks, I found a welcome break from the work and worry of everyday life. If I were to craft each reaction to a post with an eye to avoiding your nit-picking and ad hominem attacks, I would never write another word. If I so offend you, nobody is forcing you to read me anyway... Talk to you doctor about whatever it is I represent to you that so enrages you. Are you resentful of someone with an Ivy League education? Or someone who has lived all over the world? Or someone who is not afraid to admit their own imperfections? And does it give you a sense of superiority to pounce on typos and careless grammatical slips? When I publish work, I take pains to perfect it, but this stuff here is just play. Are you resentful of married women, and therefore do you delight in their weaknesses and troubles? Have you ever carried your own child in your arms and loved them? Are you afraid you never will? Does it bother you that I will pray for your troubled soul tonight? I certainly hope somebody can help you. I do not like you, but I pray that God will guide you somewhere you can find some peace and some compassion for the weaknesses and imperfections of others. "Here's a toast
to you and me, I hope we never disagree! But if we do, to hell with you, Here's a toast to me!" Buddy, I look forward to your verses every day! Thank you!
Glad u liked it--first heard it at the Beta House, Univ of Texas, 1868 or so.
:-\ Couldn't get the darned trackback to work . . . Here's my birthday gift ('hope it's the right size):
"I love watching Harvard sink into the swamp of mediocrity" One more try. Here's the URL to the aforementioned gift:
http://sisu.typepad.com/sisu/2007/02/the_feminist_ta.html Nice of her to flatter the blog so, but was it you that said that about Harvard (the link on her site says Bird Dog)?
Some of your best friends went there. I can think of one at least who finds the PC takeover of the place an occasion for sorrow rather than unholy glee. Leave the latter to those too stupid to get in as undergraduates. Retriever: You can relax. My headline was ironic, being a good-humored comment from my Yalie husband.
As a Harvard grad myself, I am horrified to see my alma mater handed over to -- in Heather MacDonald's words -- "the leader in politically correct victimology." "That Sissy Willis is a heck of a nice person."
...shows thru on her blog, too. :-) |
