We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It's all about anti-capitalism. I think so, too. Polipundit. We love capitalism. It offers the freedom to pursue whatever you want in life, as best you can. As Rudy said, historically nobody emigrated to America for freebies. Freedom means a lot to people. I always am reminded that no-one emigrated to the Soviet Union or Cuba for their wonderful free stuff. Space for the human spirit to range free, take risks, and be free to fail, is what lively people want. The principle of freedom is what separates the Conservatives from the Left.
The ACLU has abandoned the First Amendment. Flopping Aces. We gave up on them years ago. Just another leftist interest group. It's a shame they get govt money.
The use of biofuels is moving backwards, not forwards; it represents a move back towards high-carbon rather than towards high-hydrogen. Sugar cane, corn, etc. - all bad ideas. Now look what happened with palm oil.
What you do on Sunday morning tells what you worship? Asst. Village Idiot. Well, it might be a clue, but it depends.
Why I Turned Right. Powerline discusses the new book. These people sound like me - only smarter.
Like beating a dead horse. No matter how often these things are said, it seems to make no difference. A quote from Dr. Sanity:
What matters most to the minions of the political left is not truth, or reality, or even "peace" and "brotherhood"; what matters is how effective is the language used to manipulate others. Lies, distortions, ad hominem attacks; attempts to silence opposing views--all are strategies that are perfectly satisfactory if they achieve the desired effect. Ideas and reason must make way for reification of feelings; and freedom is replaced by the thought control of the compassionately totalitarian concept of political correctness.
The postmodern assault as it is used by the new totalitarian alliance of the 21st century, is a four-pronged attack to undermine - Objective reality - Reason and the rational debate of ideas - Individual freedom and freedom of thought and speech - Progress and capitalism
The strategies used in this assault are: - The distortion of language and meaning to undermine the individual's perception of reality; - The use of direct or threatened physical violence to suppress speech and individual freedom; - Politically "correct" thought control and cultural relativism to undermine reason and rational debate; - The promotion of environmental hysteria to undermine progress, industrialization and capitalism
Call me nuts, but if I were sitting down in 1917 or so, and wanted to lay out a plan to undermine the USA, the good Dr's list would be a pretty good one. Especially if one were not too concerned with time and were willing to rely on the historical inevitability of it all.
don't miss Dr Sanity quoting Bernard Lewis
on Islam and totalitarianism...:
"Traditional Islamic governments devoted great importance to consultation, to content, to limited authority, to government under law; all these things are part of the traditional Islamic background.
That all ended a couple of hundred years ago. Nothing remains of it. It ended in two phases. Phase one, modernization, mainly in the 19th and early 20th century - modernization which strengthened the power of the state and either weakened or eliminated all those intermediary powers which had previously acted as constraints on government.
The second phase, the crucial one, is Vichy, when the French government surrendered in Syria and in Lebanon, a crucial Arab country, and half of the Middle East came under German control. They were able to extend from there into Iraq, which is where the Ba'ath Party's foundations were laid. The Ba'ath Party has no roots in the Arab or Islamic past. It is the Nazi party.
Later, when the Germans left and the Russians came, it wasn't too difficult to switch from the Nazi model to the Soviet model. It only needed minor retouching."
...i can't help thinking Lewis remains soft on Islam
...after all,Mohammed's "I have been made victorious
through terror"...didn't need to arrive by camel
from Moscow or Berlin.
i was watching the History Channel's recent segment on Saddam's Iraq(Saddam had been captured, but he hadn't yet been executed when the segment was made)...:
Saddam calls in Party members for a meeting, names 'traitors' to his dictatorship, and tells 'the survivors'
they will be tasked with firing squad duty the next morning...Saddam has it all videotaped and then circulated throughout Iraq to intimidate opponents, and also to make "the survivors" complict in the murders.
