Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Ed Murrow may have been thinking of:
"If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't have a true grasp of the situation." They said it couldn't be done,
but with a smile he went right to it. He tackled the job that couldn't be done! He couldn't do it. One deal about Ed Murrow. History and the declassified documents of the Justice Dept,State Dept, and CIA have all shown that Joe McCarthy was correct in his accusations of Communist infiltration of Hollywood and The State Dept.
Murrow now, along with his leftest entourage look like fools. His status as a icon of the press is,as with so many in the press and entertainment self indulgent crap. The press could go back and examine the documents, give it the above the fold treatment but they've never had that kind of moxie. Most believe they're above the law and doing God's work when in reality it's a carnival of buncombe. Hell they still idealize the work of John "Jack" Silas Reed , and Walter J. Duranty..both American journalists and Communist dupes. Lenin's "Useful Idiots" Duranty, the Pulitzer winner, NYTimes columnist who sheparded USSR through its difficult between-the-wars period. He never even checked up on the reports of deliberate mass murder, including the starvation of 20 to 30,000,000 small landowners ("kulaks"), preferring instead to return from Moscow conferences reporting "I have seen the Future, and it works!"
Yes, where ever does one find the scale of apology needed, from the likes of the NYTimes? Answer: nowhere, never, not on your life, buster. You PROCLAIM that USEFUL IDIOTS cannot be patriotic, but your very usage of the term "USEFUL" STRONGLY suggests that such people can be as helpful as any victory garden or war bond.
Whose being self indulgent here? How many WAR BONGS have you bought? McCarthy tried to kill ideas where as Duranty tried only to represent them. McCarthy took on the signified and lost. Duranty sidestepped the signified and asked us to look to the signifier for understanding. Who left a stronger legacy? Who proved more useful to America? I wouldn't quite call Murrow a useful idiot. His prime was during the war.
Also, Habu - I dont think all those folks were duped: I think many were simply sympathetic to the communist cause - as the press is today. Patrick Kirts
..I heard all that leftest crap a thousand times over from writers far more articulate than you. Somewhere along the line you got fucked up and obviously haven't been able to recover. As for WAR BONGS ..never bought one..tried a few War BONDS though. You are the living embodiment of Lenin's "Useful Idiot" still attempting to hold on to a history that new research has proven wrong. You also show an appauling lack of understanding ot Lenin's "Useful Idiots'. Either that or you are in deep denial about history. You also have a very obtuse take on what"good" Walter J. Duranty did. If you consider not reporting the deaths of 30 million people a good thing then I imagine you subscribe to Stalin's dictum that "one death is a tragedy, 30 million just a statistic" Have a nice day ..but sorry..no trip to Hollywood..you're way too far off key and the clown suit and purple hair..well you know.. BD.
His prime was during the war. No argument there, but after that he became a dupe or as you like to characterize him sympathetic to the Communist cause. I would much prefer to be called a dupe than a sympathizer since the former represents a lack of understanding while the latter affirms the understanding and buys into the cause. Communism and socialism had tremendous following in the US in the 1930's at which time it became fashionable to believe in the Marxist line. Hollywood was awash in it, just check the record. Murrow did good work from the rooftops of hotels in London during the blitz but like all media people he needed access to remain viable in the business. His access was Hollywood, the epicenter of socialist thought and the residue of Fabian Society, among others. "If those folks weren't duped" then it leaves them only one avenue ..fellow travellers, witting of what they were doing. And McCarty in the end, after the records were declassified was proven correct in his accusations. Patrick, unless he's being sarcastic, has been confronted with a moral case so clear, that the only political answer is to slip into the paradox quest, as in, answer me, dim one, what is life but death, and what is good, without evil to make it so?
(fill-in your own philosophical conundrums) The idea is to prevent the assessment of facts such as those thirty million slow deaths (orchestrated by the ideas of similar paradox-theorists). Patrick Kirts
One thing I am astonished with after rereading you comments. It's that I wasted my time anwering them. There's always a grain of truth, habu.
Read Pol Pot--he was a fiendishly clever intellectual. Patrick alludes to 'reaction', as in, American reaction to propaganda about Tailgunner Joe helped the left, while revelations about Duranty helped the Right. Revisionism always contains a little truth, it won't sell otherwise. I have no doubt that these guys were fellow travellers, and fully aware of what they were doing. Sociallism was all the rage for the intelligentsia in the 30s and 40s. Too bad if you had to kill millions and enslave the rest to create it. Spilt milk, ya know?
BD.
..sincerely not trying for the last word here, that will be written long long after I'm gone. However the container holding the milk that has been spilt so far is apparently a vessel whose bottom is fathomless. Buddy has observed my shortcomings toward the niceities of internet discourse. Pushing sixty, very close to a millionaire with NO debt I now am unconstrained by the PC environment I had to follow in the government and the businesss world. That sure doesn't mean I'm right in my thinking, it just means I can take a shorter route to what I think is straight talk'n truth. I keep waiting for my testostrone levels to fall away at a faster rate but it would appear that the appellation curmudgeon might apply prior to that event occuring. Hell, I once gavelled down the sitting Speaker of the House of the State of Florida for disrupting a meeting that I was chairing as president of a Republican Men's Club. It helps some folks if they do one of two things with my writing...1. read every other word, or 2. skip over my offering. BTW..no one answered my query as to whether it is legal to call John Kerry a pig and a traitor when you send an email to his office? Saw two funny T shirts at the mall
SEX IS POPULAR BECAUSE IT'S CENTRALLY LOCATED and LIFE: SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED AND 100% FATAL Just to be on the safe side, habu, don't email Kerry calling him a pig and a traitor. Just say you are reporting on local opinion that he is a pig and a traitor. You are "local", you know, wherever you are.
I personally think he could've been legally executed after his private meetings with the enemy delegation in Paris, during the Kissinger/Le Duc Tho peace talks. And again when as a freshman senator he and Tom Harkin flew to Managua and came back with what they both knew was a fake promise from the Sandinistas to quit the USSR, and used that promise to defeat a support bill for the anti-communist contras (which then led to the Reagan II-destroying Iran/Contra "scandal"--a try for Watergate 2). In between out-and-out subversion, he has fought against every single weapons system that is today protecting us from his friends in hostile foreign capitals & hidey-holes. This is the guy our Democratic Party put up for president. not to rant--i'll shut up now--but the killer on the Central America thing is, we were eyeball-to-eyeball with a rampant and desperate USSR during that time of SS-20s, Pershings, Pope shooting, and the USSR sparked Lebanon Civil War.
And Kerry goes to a critical front, and does ALL he CAN to help the USSR--directly. Couldn't have been more 'direct'. And yet, no one cares. I cared--I was working in Latin America during the times, and I saw in the locals around me the damage that the Ortega/Kerry love-in did to USA interests vs USSR, out of the nation's sight and mind. Thanks Buddy but I already sent the email two days ago..so far no calls or knocks on the door.
Yeah remember when the Salt II negotitation were going on and kerry was all over the US about how intractible we were. I wrote an editorial letter asking how could we agree to parity withthe Soviets when they were building and deploying new missiles every week and we were sitting on Salt I. The guys a traitor and you're right he should have been shot for his treachery...and as you said he was nominated by one of the two major parties in this country...that's why I say we have a slow motion revolution in this country and a hot war in the ME. So Texas is where folks need to be, where the spirit of 1836 still beats in the heart of each man and woman. Pariah Kerry? People I know have been asking who he is working for.
Net emigration to Texas can help its prison-industrial complex market. That such a thing comes from REAL new reasearch tells us all something important. But I do not know where your "REAL" research comes from and I dare not speculate nor even "go there," brother.
But I know because it is uncool to think about how prisons make people rich that you enjoy being confused instead of knowing anything. And you'd better always worship Messiah Murrow because he can make you feel good about ignorance, unenlightenment and intolerance. Go eat some transfats and think some racist thoughts to clear your head of the dissonance, *sir*. Go embrace murrows larry the cable guy epistemology and see how far that gets you. Texas thanks habu for that.
Little story, the first shot fired in that 1836 war of indepedence was fired by the "Come and Take it cannon". Mexican regulars were combing the area of the town of Gonzales, dis-arming the citizenry due to the trouble in the air. A cavalry unit sent word into Gonzales to surrender the town's cannon, a little brass 6-pounder. The town's militia, all 18 of 'em, sent back word "Come and Take it". The cavalry unit did come, and were repulsed, thus touching off the war that led through the Alamo and to San Jacinto, where Texas won, and became the Lone Star State (ten years later to join the USA, fifteen years after that to secede to the CSA, five years still later to get whupped back in, to whar she sits to this day). "Come and Take it" the cannon was thus named, after the battle. It resides to this day in the town of Gonzales, in the "Come and Take it" Cannon Museum. Buddy,
The very definition of "laconic." ????? ???? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molon_labe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonidas_I Couldn't resist this either:
Frank Miller's The 300, about Leonidas I and his Spartans versus those dirt-worshipping Persians. Frank Miller's understands the dilemmas as much as any of us. His Batman vs Al Qaeda is due out this year as well. I very much look forward to that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Holy_Terror%2C_Batman%21%22 Which reminds me, we needn't retreat to fiction either; Bruce Willis is hoping to deliver similar patriotic goods, based on the writings of Michael Yon: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-1892675,00.html Think of the logistical problem in Willis' production vs Michael Moore. One could just troll news footage and voice over it and edit. The other has to construct a story, with an obligation to pay homage to something greater than himself. Buddy - to our previous discussion: perhaps the left is simply easier to learn. "Molon Labe" --love it--thanks, I'd never made that connection, duh. I wonder if those fellas in Gonzales had read Plutarch on Leonidas? In 1836, it's a good bet that motto was knowingly adopted.
I think you're on to something, with "perhaps the left is simply easier to learn". As you say re Moore vs Willis--the one must only assert, the other must manifest spirit and art. |
