Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

"Controversy"

A reporter can create controversy, and thus a story, almost effortlessly. All you do is ask enough people a suggestive question until you find someone who disagrees with whatever it is. Then you have your story.

Whether they're a nut, or uninformed, matters not.

Apparently some people do not care for coyote hunt contests. We did a piece on the eastern Coyote last year. We would welcome such contests in New England.

Indiana is full of coyotes. They kill small dogs in yards, newborn calves, cause car wrecks, and are pests in general. I suppose these bleeding hearts might have a case if the coyote were endangered, but that it certainly is not.

Course, I was raised on a farm with guns, and varmint hunting was something we did all the time. I'm not generally sympathetic to so-called animal rights activists. Indiana gave in to them in the 90s and restricted deer hunting. The result is that now, they have to have deer kills several times a year to deal with the overpopulation. Deer in town, right by the road, completely unafraid of human beings.

Prior to this topic I read a similar article. It stated that the goernment kills 80,000 coyotes per year. They are everywhere..or is it we're now everywhere with 300+ million.. anyway I've talked to lots of folks in Montana about the critters and shoot,shovel, and shut up is the byword on wolves. Coyotes you don't have to shovel.

So far I haven't seen the headline "A dingo ate my baby!!"

This gentleman has never hunted humans? Musta gone to Canada during the great Vietnam Hunt and Shoot Festival back in the day.

First off, I have nothing against hunting. Grew up on it, shot expert because of it. But human hunting was, when you get right down to it, the epitome. Never cared for the other type after. Just seemed small game.

I live in coyote rich territory, they are a nuisance, but a little commonsense protects one. Same as rattlers, they are there, but if they don't mess with me, I don't mess with them. 99 percent of the time that works.

The problem with them in the East is that they are not and never were native to here, so they are a real disruption to the balance of things. If they killed deer as wolves do, it would be fine, but they can't. They just kill the little stuff.

They sure do scare tame dogs. When they set up a howl, my Labs want in-the-house-now.

The illo is just great, coyote in snow. Saved it in my wildlife pichers file.
