We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

I did not know much about Bananas

They seem to have their origin in New Guinea where they have been domesticated for maybe 10,000 years. The "trees" - not really trees - die after producing a bunch once. And the fruit is technically a berry.


A Banana Split used to be a cool dessert. I like cooked Plantains.


And I like Wikipedia when the topic is as non-controversial as bananas.


Our readers already know who first brought bananas to North America - the old Cape Codder Lorenzo Dow Baker.

I leave recently that the banana of today is not the banana of my parents' childhood. (If they were still alive, they'd be around 100.)

We have banana trees, and sometimes get fruit if we have a winter without a freeze, not uncommon here in the subtropics. At first we waited and waited for the fruit to develop a flavor, then gave up as it finally withered. Turned out we're supposed to cut the bunch off and bring it inside for about a week, after which it's absolutely delicious.

I've been told bananas are really a kind of grass. The tree does die after it fruits, but ours always spring back up from the ground nearby, just like a grass. They want a ton of water. I think they'd be happiest without about 100 inches a year.
