Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

'Making weight-related jokes counts as ‘harassing conduct that may create a hostile environment.’
I'll consider refraining, then, but first you're going to have to publish a group picture of the Northwestern Administrators. "If somebody told her to haul ass, she'd have to make two trips"
(Sorry; I would never actually use it. It is very hard to lose weight once it has been gained, though for that very reason it is reasonable to try to avoid gaining more. 'Does climate scare you?'
Truth be told, I do get concerned when we go without rain for an extended period of time, the way we currently are in southern New England. Well, there's always Webster Lake. " Reckless rhetoric from Dems and media to blame for second Trump assassination attempt"
This is true for school shooting too. Not because there is any intent to push people into school shootings but because there are a lot of unstable people in the world who are affected by what they read or hear on the news and they don't process that like a normal person. Most school shooters have some vague dream of disrespect. Re: A Single Grain of Rice Could Win the Presidency
The article states that for the first time Republicans are encouraging their voters to vote by mail. This represents a total misunderstanding of how mail in voting is used by Democrats. They don't "just" encourage their voters to vote by mail. They send people to pick up finished ballots and help the voter mark the ballots. They buy batches of unopened ballots and fill them out. They register thousands of people who either don't exist or are unqualified to vote and use those ballots to fraudulently vote. To simply encourage your voters to vote by mail isn't going to fix this problem. Voting by mail IS the problem. You actually understand the issues plus they mail out numerous ballots to the same person and same address. Not to mention the Post office is working for the dems.
Deployed military members... the extent of Harris's unawareness is amusing and tragic at the same time. The democratic party appeals to the baser instincts.
Re: Ukraine. There does seem to be a contingent of people that really desire an escalation - an all out war with Russia. Are they desiring a nuclear exchange?. I’m sure Dick Cheney knows who they are. Along with Mitch McConnell, Nancy Pelosi, Lindsey Graham, et al.
I still contend that if people had to write checks to the government every quarter, to pay their taxes, things would be a lot different in this country. Both of Kamala’s parents have PhD’s - in economics (if you care to consider Marxism, economics). I worked as a blue collar worker, grew up around blue collar workers and never once met a person with a PhD. Even after I became a mechanical engineer, and had met plenty of PhD’s, none of them were economists. Not saying it isn’t possible, it just seems like Kamala’s story is highly unlikely. Especially the bit about how she lived in the same neighborhood as all these blue collar workers. There’s a video of Kamala’s ‘blue collar’ neighborhood in Montreal. It certainly doesn’t come close to resembling any neighborhood I frequented in my childhood. It does resemble the upper crust neighborhoods that have walls and gates around them. The kind of neighborhood where you won’t find street people shooting up drugs, leaving their litter, make shift tents, stolen shopping carts everywhere. I just wonder how many of us could have done better in that debate? How could you hold your temper when the moderators are ganging up on you, only fact checking your answers - with lies. The whole thing was rigged and the whistleblower has the receipts. I still contend that if people had to write checks to the government every quarter, to pay their taxes...
Amen to that contention, brother! Four lean months piled atop the annual haircut do not improve my mood, nor my low opinion of Uncle Sam's irresponsible escapades. B. Hammer: Both of Kamala’s parents have PhD’s - in economics
Kamala Harris's mother, Shyamala Gopalan, had a PhD in endocrinology and worked in medical research. Her father, Donald J. Harris, is an economist, but Kamala was raised by her mother since she was seven years old. Donald Harris has said that Marx was an influence, but he is a researcher in post-Keynesian economics. B. Hammer: Especially the bit about how she lived in the same neighborhood as all these blue collar workers. Kamala has said she grew up middle class. It's obvious to everyone that she was raised by her mother without a father around. There's no need to harp on it continuously. That's just mean.
Oh, I see. A blue collar worker isn’t considered middle class? Even though we liked to have nice lawns?

They can be, but not always. She described her East Bay home as "a beautiful working-class neighborhood of firefighters, nurses and construction workers". Not sure why you think this "bit" is hard to believe. Because the home she grew up in is worth $2 million in today's market. Clearly that is NOT blue collar and it may even be out of range of doctors. $2 million for a home is a lot of money whether you own it outright or a making a mortgage payment.
OneGuy: Because the home she grew up in is worth $2 million in today's market.
They didn't own the property and all real estate in the Bay area has skyrocketed in value. How did you determine the value? Okay. Found it.
QUOTE: Harris spent most of her early childhood in Berkeley, where her mother attended graduate school at UC. For around six years, Harris lived above a daycare facility on Bancroft Way in West Berkeley, an area known as “the flatlands” that was a center for the city’s Black population. The home is about 2.5 miles away from Thousand Oaks Elementary School, where she was bused as part of the city’s desegregation program. A perusal with Google street view shows it to be very much a working class neighborhood with trees-lined streets and lawns and shrubs. No sign of "people shooting up drugs, leaving their litter, make shift tents, stolen shopping carts everywhere." Of course that's today not yesteryear. The trees are taller, and the houses are older, but people still park on the street.

I thought she went to school in Montreal Canada from the age of 12 all the way through high school. Her parents, both PhD's, worked at Stanford and McGill, so undoubtedly made good money. Not your typical "middle class" upbringing.
ruralcounsel: I thought she went to school in Montreal Canada from the age of 12 all the way through high school.
Harris was describing her life in the years from when her parents split and before moving to Montreal, and she lived in what she described as “a beautiful working-class neighborhood of firefighters, nurses and construction workers". If you look above, you will find information about that neighborhood, which is clearly consistent with her description. Harris has also discussed her experience with busing for integration during that time. Berkeley does not have "middle class" neighborhoods, even down on the flats, and hasn't for many years. THe UC Berkely campus attracts plenty of money and upper class folks.
It might be middle class to someone who owned property up on the heights and hills, but the flats haven't been middle class since the Oakland shipyards closed up. I know, because I lived there in the 1970's. Middle class folks lived in Oakland to the south, or Richmond to the North..

Huh? We posted a street view. It's obviously an older, working-class neighborhood. According to Zillow, rents on that street are around $3,500 per month. (The upstairs where the Harris's lived rents for less than $3,000.) In Berkeley, police make about $9,000 per month, teachers about $6,000, construction about $4,000. A police/homemaker or a construction/teacher couple could afford to live there.

Here's a list of available rental units in Berkeley.
This 3 bed, 2 bath house is a few blocks away from where the Harris's once lived, and just as near to the Bay, is $2,850 per month.

I am 71. I think every generation in my lifetime has been told it is not ready for the workplace.
