Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

People are absolutely influenced by the media. My dart board guess is that the media is good for 7% to maybe 10% of the Democratic vote total. I have seen it in my family. One gets their news almost exclusively from places like NPR and they have drifted a long way to the left in their political views. If you repeat the lies often enough people begin to believe them. I have another relation who always voted Republican, but voted for Biden because he thought Trump was "too dangerous." Where do you suppose he heard that over and over again? A family member recently told my spouse that the reason we were still alive is because of the covid 19 vaccines. Only watch CNN and other main stream media. No hope of reaching them.
The nation’s best hackers found vulnerabilities in voting machines — but no time to fix them
I have a friend who told me: My brother, who sold security software for a good part of his life, says that it is a weekend fix. But, of course, the first step is wanting to fix it. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/08/12/hackers-vulnerabilities-voting-machines-elections-00173668 I worked in computers for 40 years. 12 years repairing them followed by 28 or so programming them. This was a while back but my point is still relevant and in fact more true today than ever before. Every computer and every program can be hacked or tweaked or intentionally or unintentionally set up to be accessed through a back door. Some of the shit I wrote I intentionally put in a back door or two and some funny stuff buried in their. I wrote a security system for an important database where I captured before and after images of every record accessed as well as every key stroke the user made. And yet... I could bypass it if I wanted to.
Everything you do on your microsoft operating system is available to someone IF you are online and in some cases even if you are not. Everything you saved to your computer within the last 12 months is in the cloud and half a dozen three letter agencies can look at it. My fake name on this post is in a file somewhere along with my real data and every fake name I ever used. And, yes! even those "safe" operating systems also have some level of this same sharing with certain agencies. But you probably already knew that or suspected it. The NYT isn't upset by softball questions, they're upset that Trump is getting airtime. Conduct your own informal surveys: How many stories do you hear about the Democrat campaign, before you hear one about the Republicans? No matter how fawning or critical, the Democrats are getting the airtime, and the Republicans are getting starved of oxygen. The progressive legacy mainstream media has its strategy now, for the race.
Prediction: Democrat Convention coverage will be everywhere, all positive, all fawning, all joyous, etc etc etc. Any problems outside will be downplayed. And you won't hear a thing about Republicans - and when you do, it will be negative and short. I like to imagine that a good chunk of those millions Soros throws at progressives gets pocketed by scammers posing as progressives.

Not a soothing read. Society is in big trouble. I admit, I am partially to blame. I was on the bandwagon for legalizing drugs. The War on Drugs - the feds always need a war - was a cure worse than the crime. What I didn’t see was the true devastation of social media and these high tech devices that we carry everywhere we go. VDH pointed out that you literally have the world’s knowledge at your finger tips, but it is so disjointed and so distracting that no knowledge is gleamed. The safety net created by the Great Society - A War on Poverty - created an extremely lazy and dependent society. The society that needs its safe spaces and is fearful of any risks, especially the risk of having your life views confronted, is even worse. No need to do anything other than cash the government check. Oh wait, you don’t even need to cash a check anymore your EBT card is filled every month. As Glenn Reynolds says: They’ll turn us all into beggars. Beggars are easier to please. Have the so called ruling class elites given any thought to who will actually build things in the future? Will there be enough workers left to even keep the lights on, the clean water flowing? Will there be enough workers left to maintain their homes and lawns and their numerous mansions across the land? What good is a King ruling over a bunch of shiftless addicts? The Z-bot's non-sequitur response to the 5 climate scandals in 3, 2, 1... Come on, Cliff Clavin you can do it!
Classical music as medicine: Mood-boosting tunes synchronize the brain
I had a high-stress job for a while in my misspent youth. One trick I used to decompress at the end of the day was to listen only to classical music or jazz on the homeward drive. It worked so well I set all the radio buttons (wow, how retro) to classical and jazz. BTW, I tried NPR for a week, and arrived home in a murderous rage. Scratch that button.
