We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Up the Hudson River

We were up in Hudson, NY, and environs this weekend for a party. Not on our boat, alas, but we did take a ride on the river. Beautiful. Frederick Church country.


Interestingly, the Hudson remains an estuary for over 100 miles north.  Still kind of tidal, but with a 5 knot current.



Kinda odd that a port 120 miles north of NYC would have been a major whaling port, but it was. It's a big fashionable summer town now, and an easy Amtrak from NYC. Warren St. is shop after shop, and cafe after cafe. Not my style, but I get its appeal. Architecturally, very fun and interesting.

The HRV is one of the most beautiful places in New England. Most of "up state" NY is beautiful in the summer and fall. For motorcycle riders, there are no ends to delightful twisties and variable terrain.

Never been up the Hudson by boat but it looks like a fun place to wander about, anchor with some confidence, sleep well and think about what the settlers encountered before government made everything "better".

The Hudson River in NY is NOT part of New England.

I grew up along the Hudson River, north of the Tappan Zee Bridge, at the widest part. The Hudson Highlands, to the north, are beautiful.

Where did you get on the boat to head up the river? What town? How far did you go up? Years ago, I took an evening cruise out of Peekskill up the Hudson. Very nice memory.

Nothing like that. Just a tourist boat trip from Hudson.

The Circle Line does do a trip to Bear Mountain.

I crewed on a sailboat from Quebec to New York, then offshore...
The trip down Lake Champlain, Champlain Canal and the Hudson River was very pleasant. The Hudson was once a major commercial thoroughfare and it was interesting to experience the history of the route.

You're nearly in my neck of the woods ! Swing up closer to the Federal lock/Mohawk for a visit to post industrial Troy, it's not dissimilar to Hudson.

As far as not New England, I think you'd find those of us from the former Patroons near Albany/Troy identify closer with the New England individualist/self sufficient mindset than most other things.
