We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It's its own thing. I often wish I had done it. OK, the USMC is a different beast with a different purpose.
But "remedial swimmers"? And only a few weeks?
I was once boarded by armed Coasties. Did nothing wrong - just a random check. Slightly intimidating but I did worry that my flares might have been outdated.
I like the Coast Guard. However law enforcement in general is inept and focuses on the wrong things. The boating issue is a perfect example. The Coast Guard did not board your boat because you were likely breaking the law or were a threat. They board dozens of innocent boaters boats everyday. When they do it they aren't really suspicious of you they are merely meeting a quota. On inland waters police check and board thousands of everyday for one purpose only; that $100-200 ticket for not having some minor rule/law implemented. The rest of the police, those that aren't boarding or inspecting boats, do the same thing. Pick any big city where gangs kill a dozen or so people every weekend, these cities will have third to a half of their police out on the roads and highways pulling you over for lights or turns without signals or California stops. Why? For that $100-$400 ticket. It isn't about law enforcement or protecting the public it is about fining the public and harassing the shit out of them.
There is an even worse trait of our many police departments. And that is an intentional intimidating and violence committed against citizens literally so that the police can justify violence against someone that they are arresting. You can see it on TV on the cop shows where some 300 lb cop is kneeling on the perp trying to break a rib while pinning his arms under him and shouting "stop resisting. While a second cop is pounding a knee into his side again trying to break a rib or punching the hapless victim in the head again and again. Are there times when the arrestee is indeed the bad guy? Sure, he deserves to be arrested and brought to justice. But make no mistake, what I just described happens, i.e. they perform the arrest exactly as I described so they can inflict violence and bodily damage on the guy and justify it. They can often be heard on camera bragging about putting the hapless victim in the hospital. Extra points if the perp is already in handcuffs when they are abused. Disgusting...
I love the Coast Guard. I lived on the coast and seeing that big red stripe was a constant source of joy and security to me. A Coast Guard helicopter flew over my house (at high speed) at least once a week. My prayer was always "Please Dear Lord---keep them safe and let them get there in time. Everybody lives this day."
People do dumb things on the water; they never think they'll get into trouble. But they do, over and over again. That's why the CG checks your boat. So they won't have to fish you out of the water at midnight.
