Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

oe Biden’s $320 Million Floating Gaza Pier Just Broke Off and Is Now Sinking
Would you buy a bridge from this man? Nah, He really didn’t need to do anything. Just sit back and watch the incompetence do its thing.
The primary purpose of the peer was to resupply Hamas. That was successful. When I see a headline about a 'non-profit', I have come to assume the worst. A decade ago, or more, I would have immediately assumed that the organization had been put into place to fund somebody's lifestyle. This is what the Clinton's did, in their post-Presidency afterglow, where they were cashing in on their name. The foundation did a few good things for society, but it was really good at raising money to ensure a lifestyle of first-class comfort, excellent weddings, and top-flight leisure travel.
But nowadays, the purpose of non-profits seems to be even worse than just a vehicle for lifestyle enhancements. Nowadays it's a way for governments to quietly engage in extra-curricular activities without all that bothersome legislating. Like funneling hordes of illegal immigrants across the border and setting them up in hotels, in US cities. Just f'rinstance. Not to mention funding all different kinds of election shenanigans, putting people in place within the election apparatus that have absolutely no business being there, but are there by benefit of high-up, cross-organizational ties between people in the Administration and people in the NGOs. They are a blight on civilization, and they should be getting regulated out of existence when their mission creeps into becoming a privately-controlled arm of government, doing all the dirty work in a deniable way, above transparency and above principles of good governance. re Judge Says New York City Jury Doesn’t Need to Agree on Predicate Crime to Convict Trump of Guilt

They may well be inept or it may be that the civilian bureaucracy that defines policy is inept. This is not much different that our military policy in the Vietnam war and to a slightly less extent in the Korean war. We did not enter these wars to win we entered to "do something to make it look like we wanted to fix things". And the sad part of that failed policy is our young men and women died in large numbers in that wasted effort. War is hell. If you don't intend to win don't go to war. If you do intend to win bring everything to the battle and kill everything there and keep doing it until there are no enemy left. Do it hard and fast without mercy until it is finished. Israel is listening to the talking heads too much. They should have already finished Hamas. They should have totally ignored civilian casualties and gone into Gaza with everything and killed anyone with a gun or who had participated with Hamas. As for the hostages; they should have made it clear from day one that there would be no negotiations and everyone in Hamas would be hunted down and killed and their bodies buried in a pigs bellies for what they did to the hostages. re China Cracks Down
This will do immense long term damage to the Chinese economy. There is no free exchange of ideas when people know that they are being spied on. That in turn will stifle commercial and industrial innovation. Princeton professor smacked down by facts... it would seem facts are inconvenient obstacles at an Ivy league institution. Perhaps bar the windows and get them on useful medications and some moral therapy.

QUOTE: Merchan just delivered the coup de grâce instruction. He said that there is no need to agree on what occurred. They can disagree on what the crime was among the three choices. Thus, this means that they could split 4-4-4 and he will still treat them as unanimous... https://x.com/JonathanTurley/status/1795829624502681688 QUOTE: He said that there is no need to agree on what occurred. That is how it works. For instance, the New York burglary statute, N.Y. Penal Law § 140.30, criminalizes breaking and entering "with intent to commit a crime therein". The intended crime does not have to be specified. It could be stealing. It could be assault. It could be kidnapping. The jury may disagree on the underlying crime but still reach a unanimous guilty verdict on the burglary charge. See De Vonish v. Keane. Oh Zachriel, in every thread you prance,

However, that Supreme Court decision was based on federal statutory law, not a constitutional provision, so it is not controlling with regard to New York statutory law. The example provided in the previous example shows how predicates are generally applied, and specifically applied in New York law.
