Maggie's Farm

Sorry. I grew up poor. I didn't get an allowance. My first job when I was six was collecting newspapers from neighbors and selling them for $.05 for 100 lbs. My brother would go with me and he would collect rags and scrap metal. 5 cents was awesome. My parents bought us a pair of pants and a pair of shoes in September. That's it! I wore last years pants or my brothers hand me downs to play and the new pair to school. I wore the shoes everyday, school, play, rain, snow, whatever. I wore socks for mittens, honestly! We had one pair of Bean boots and when you grew into them you got to wear them in the winter. I wore them for two years and then back to shoes in the snow. My mother grew some veggies and canned them. Both my parents worked. But we never had money enough to get out of poverty. I'm 80 and I still am cheap as an old Scotsman.
Today I'm not poor but my wallet is really, really tight. Can't forget those days when I had nothing. I still look at the price on a menu first before I decide what to order. I have painted my house(s) 7 times and put on new roofs 3 times. Never hired a contractor for anything. Even do my own plumbing. I still pick up a penny on the ground if I find one. Too old to change now.
