We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Easter Feast

We have the whole crew here this year, sadly without Popop who died a couple of weeks ago. Mrs. BD is busy picking out his funeral music. Yes, it will be an RC Funeral Mass.


Thanks to God, life goes on and Easter is a magical day, a feast day in Christianity.


I'm grilling 2 marinated butterflied legs of lamb - might be more than 16 people need especially including the littles. I have 4 1/2 grandkids and 4 step-grandkids.  


Mrs. BD is making 2 traditional Rice Pies. I made some mint sauce.  Everybody else has to bring sides.


I think we'll watch the NYC St. Patrick's Easter Mass live on the machine in the morning, cuz too much to do to get to our church. Yes, we Protestants do love an RC Mass and I do like Cardinal Dolan. Same narrative.


Easter blessings to all, regardless of views on existence and its mysteries.

Sorry to hear about Popop. Hope the funeral is a memorable and meaningful experience.

In the Hamp household we will be celebrating Easter with family. Ham, Instapot scalloped potatoes, cooked carrots, and some cute Easter cupcakes we got at the grocery. Simple, but the getting together part is the important part, not the food.

I am not a churchgoer, but am of Protestant roots. I once attended a Christmas Eve Mass in Guatemala. The rural church wasn't a three hundred year old cathedral, but a relatively new building. It was simple, not ornate: in that sense, more Protestant than Roman Catholic.

I found the Mass to be emotionally uplifting (I don't remember what the hymns etc. said, but as I speak Spanish, they were not mere sounds). After that experience I could see why people wanted to attend Mass.

Nice photo, I love Asparagus. Used to enjoy lamb at various seasons, usually purchased just off season and kept in the freezer. There are so many excellent recipes available that only limitation may be with what you kitchen has to offer.

The only reason for Easter is that Christ overcame death and in doing so, offered any who will trust in Him a way, path and knowledge despite ritual or dogma.

My church--The Episcopal Church (American)or Anglican(English) was destroyed by the dirty girls of Seattle. The same women who chose and elected Obama. The women of GREAT WEALTH destroyed the church that was guided by the gentle gift of grace accompanied by reason. Yeah--they burned that baby down in the early part of this century. Gotta have a female head and then she has to have queers. Any small community church that stood up to her was destroyed by law suit after lawsuit after lawsuit. Finally, the small communities who had built their own buildings were driven into bankruptcy and the property surrendered to HER. I once had a "blessed "from Chicago" church leader tell me that he was in charge of the retirement funds for all ministers across this nation. If they did not accept homosexuality those old time ministers would see a reduction in their retirement. Nice guy that ever so sophisticated "leader of the new church". I wonder how he feels now standing in front of empty buildings spewing out his version of the New Testament?

Back then no one cared what was happening to the largest most influential church in the building of this country--the Catholics had a lot of seats in the pews, but it was the Episcopal church that guided our decision makers into compromise.

Happy Easter. I will pray quietly in front of my computer looking at the only copy of the 1927 Prayer Book I can find online.

Happy Easter to all. Christ is Risen!
We attended the Easter Vigil Mass last night. About 18 people were received into the Catholic faith. It's pleasing to see the number of 20–30 year-olds in the congregation, and joining the Church. It was a wonderful Mass with great music (I love hearing a rousing organ), incense, sprinkling the congregation with Holy Water, and most importantly, Holy Communion, and receiving the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ.
