Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Beer?

Do not try to explain why St. Patrick's Day is associated with booze. 


I do not like Guiness, and I do not enjoy Irish whiskey - except in Irish Coffee. 


Mrs. BD is half Irish. Her Dad, Irish to the bone, died a week or so ago, so I will raise a whiskey toast to his memory. 


Otherwise, my plan is to have a Modelo or two with our St. Paddy's party. Modelo is Irish isn't it?

Modelo (or is it O'Model?) is closer to Irish than Bud Light, so there's that.

I've completely given up on the big brewers in favour of local craft breweries.

90% of local craft brews are crap.

99% of BigBeer Inc. brews are double plus ungood crap.

10% of local craft brews are spectacular.

1%...

You get it.

Youngest offspring and friend toured Ireland some years ago. Landed in Dublin (raining as I recall), found their hostel, and headed out to the nearest pub. Ended up sharing a table with another tourist and his Irish guide. The Canadians were given an in-depth lesson as to when a pint of Guinness was ready to drink, and were thrilled when a cèilidh broke out at a nearby table. It was a great evening for the pair of the both of them.
Ironically, they came away from Ireland preferring Smithwick's to Guinness.

You really have to go to the Czech Republic to understand a society that truly loves beer. Austria, to a slightly lesser extent.

Shiner Bock and Negro Modelo are pretty good standards though, for commercial brewery products.

Uhersky Brod is the best beer in the universe.

I'm of German heritage, 1st gen, my father spins in his grave.

Plus, Uhersky Brod is the location of the CZ small arms factory, with tours.

While I was growing up it was nearly impossible for a local brewery to get licensed. Today, Montana is blessed with many young breweries that are a result of our beautiful fresh water. Most of these breweries are turning out very fine beers--better than anything I have tasted from back east.

With regard to Guinnes. Tonight for the first time I soaked the corned beef in a solution of water and one bottle of Guinnes. It turned out very nice. It smoothed out the edge.
