We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I had never heard of Taskrabbit, so I did a web search. From their website:
QUOTE:
Taskrabbit is a platform that connects you with vetted Taskers who can help you with various home tasks, such as furniture assembly, moving, cleaning, painting, and more. You can choose a Tasker by price, skills, and reviews, and schedule a task as early as today.
Sounds like what Angies does . I didn't have a good experience with Angies. From talking with contractors who have been on Angies's list of contractors, I have been told that Angies takes too big a cut for its commission. Two contractors told me that Angies paid them less than half of what customers paid Angies. One was an electrician friend of mine. I could see a commission of 25-35%, but more than 50% is too much.
I also used Angies to price new kitchen cabinets. Angies contractors priced the job at $10-$15 k, while Angies website said $26K was the price for a kitchen rehab. I priced new kitchen cabinets, delivered but not installed, and got bids of around $3,ooo.
It takes $7-$12 k to take out old kitchen cabinets and install new ones? My electrician friend got me in touch with a carpenter who will take out the old cabinets and install new ones plus install countertops, for $3-4,000.
Basically the contractors were informing me that on top of material and labor, they would charge me about $4-8k as their contractor's fee. This isn't Angies's fault.
They can charge those prices, as there are plenty around who have that money. But I am not one of those moneyed people, so I will decline, once again, the services of an Angies contractor.
My electrician friend got me in touch with a plumber friend who charges much less than the going rate, but he still makes good money at those discounted rates. Which shows how much plumbers charge today.
