Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The Hillsdale College free online courses


As much as I enjoy The Great Courses, I am happy to see Hillsdale put its own courses online, free. 


I am in the middle of their Basic Chemistry course.  Good fun, but not a real college Chemistry 101 course.


Yeah, the Periodic Table is remarkable. 


You might be different, but in secondary school and college, I always would have benefited from a broad overview before going into the weeds. Hillsdale's Chem series is like that.

The great courses could be awful I recall listening to one written by a prof who termed the Rosenbergs and others of their ilk "dissidents."

Not infrequently they were anti-American/capitalism or just plain marxist

I recently came across The Public Burning, by Robert Coover. It is a fictionalized version of the Rosenberg case, that purports to tell us the "facts." It was published in 1977. Ronald Radosh's The Rosenberg File came out in 1983, which demolished any "facts" Coover wanted to tell his readers in 1977 about the Rosenbergs.

I remember thinking, in 9th grade, the very first time I saw a big wall chart of the periodic table in a chemistry class, "If we know all of this, why can't we just make whatever we want?"

I always research the professor / instructor before viewing a Great Course. If you lack time for that check the creation date. If it is more than 15 years old it is probably okay.
