We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Is fentanyl tit for tat... I rather suspect so. The Roosevelt families first fortune was gained by trafficking opium in China under protection of the British flag. I doubt FDR ever brought that up when electioneering.
This is the fentanyl crisis. It may seem strange to connect a very modern and very American phenomenon to a brace of wars waged 200 years ago by the British Empire on the last of the Chinese dynasties. But so the rhetoric runs: we are witnessing a Reverse Opium War; a belated Sinic revenge.
The Communist Party teaches schoolchildren that China was once a glorious superpower, until it was brought low by that subtlest and most devious of British weapons: Lachryma papaveris (poppy tears). Opium sapped the nation’s strength, and when the Chinese authorities banned it, then Britain went to war—twice.
Those wars crippled the Qing and heralded a “century of humiliation” for China—multiple military defeats and lopsided treaties, the Anglo-French looting and burning of the Emperor’s Summer Palace, the Japanese Rape of Nanking and lethal human experimentation by Unit 731—ending only with the liberating forces of Marxism-Leninism in 1949. Now some commentators are telling us that history has inverted, that karma has kicked in.
The article and the theory are silly. It seems intended to give the CCP a pass. As in because 300 years ago someone did something now we are going to kill 100,000 of your people every year and we are in the right to do so. Sorry, not buying it. I have zero doubt that China is intending to do as much harm to the West as possible and it isn't about something that happened years ago it is about raw power today. This story could have come from the Lincoln Project or any of the America hating leftist groups.
In highschool, in the 60's, we learned about this. Decades after the Chinese were struggling with conquering the people of tibet(not the land, that they had). They set up a program of opium dens, added tobacco and prostitution, aimed at the youth of tibet, and voila, mission accomplished. I think we, the usa, are foolish to not realize the long and bitter memory China has, see what their ancient war weapons are accomplishing here, and take some pretty drastic steps to counter these attacks.
Something for all to remember is that social mood gets crazier and more violent as economies deteriorate. Look at the Shanghai composite index (Chinese stock market) and you will see it dropping rather precipitously. Markets and mood go hand in hand and China will become 'less' friendly as it continues.
Same with the US markets and European markets. If you measure the US market values you will find that measured in gold, which is a definable commodity, our markets, DJIA, topped in 1999. Financial contagion is battering nearly all world markets and we are no exception. Eventually, nearly all debt will NOT be repaid... the weakest debt is destroyed first.
