We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Lamb Burger (and meatloaf), etc.

Over the years Mrs. BD has found the recipe for the best-ever meatloaf. Sorry - I don't have the recipe right now, but I know it includes ground pork, lamb, and beef, plus of course mashed on the side. It's the lamb, I feel, that makes it so tasty and crunchy on the edges. Excellent for a sammich later, too.


I was reminded of Lamb Burgers by the menu of a popular midtown Manhattan Irish pub, Connolly's, on 47th St. Irish (not entirely) pub menu. Since our neighborhood Scots/Irish pub closed this year due to crazy rent, we need something like that once in a while. Yeah, a good Shepherd's Pie can be nice but I've had some disappointing ones. Mrs. makes an excellent one.


Everybody on this planet seems to like a burger, but a lamb burger is less routine and has more flavor: Lamb Burger.  I like tomato slices and red onion slices on the side with any burger. Fries (aka chips) of course.


Off-topic, in Scotland they will serve mutton as "lamb". Trust me - it's mutton but you could call it "older lamb." There's an English insult, "Mutton dressed as lamb." Know what it means?


In the mood for a mutton chop? In NYC, it's Keen's (since 1885).

My sister and I visited our cousin at his ranch in Oklahoma. Burgers from his cattle- delicious.

We eat a lot of lamb, have a local farmers market where a friend of ours sells the lamb he raises, mostly Icelandic sheep, and wool products. Lamb burgers all the time, grilled to more doneness than we would a beef burger, with crispy edges.

Lamb kabobs are great, simply toss with salt, olive oil, and maybe chopped garlic and put the pieces directly on the hot grill.

Lamb sausages, including merguez, as well as chops and ribs, yum.

I really like making a kofta from the lamb burger, grated onion and chopped garlic with spices like cumin, paprika, and cinnamon, roll them into fingers and grill crispy.

I'm grateful that we have such a quality local source of lamb at very reasonable prices, from a producer we know and trust.

My preference is a 1 pound 80/20 beef burger patty, grilled with two sweet onion sandwiches on the side. Preferably Vidalia when available!

It's Mediterranean, not Anglo, but this is my go-to lamburger. It's always a hit.

Ground lamb
Cumin
Dried oregano
Crumbled feta
Minced red onion

Combine and shape into patties.

Grill over a flame, or broil if there's too much snow outside.

Serve on a bun. Sesame is nice.

We have meatloaf fairly often; Mum had a rather bland (spice it up a bit) recipe with a really cool topping. But I don't serve with mashed; i go for the scalloped potatoes. In a greased pot (I use butter) place layers of potato and onion. Then toss in a tin of Golden Mushroom soup, half a tin of milk, cover, and place in a 325 degree oven until the soup has melded into a sauce.

The modern mideast version of "mutton dressed as lamb"
Is the unfortunate practice of shawarma places that mix red meat turkey in with the lamb on the spit. They top it off with a large chunk of tail fat to flavor the stack as it cooks.

I've always heard it as 'Mutton masquerading as lamb'. It's always a little sad to see. Knobby knees and wattles give it away.

Keen's is worth a trip to NYC all by itself.

Their ginormous "mutton chop" is absolutely delectable.

My wife makes meatloaf with our home raised ground beef mixed with Jimmy Dean sausage. It's very good.

Sorry. Don't have the recipe.

I just don't see lamb/mutton available out here. You see it at Easter but other times, not so much.
