Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Books: Like a miracle


It is normal for you to produce nearly 100 billion white blood cells each day.  How the Immune System Works 


That book is written for the general public. Mind-boggling. It is a wonder that it all works so well most of the time. Nothing man can make works as well, for so long. With health, I tend not to be overly curious about why things go wrong, but to be amazed about how anything ever goes right.

Love that EPIC George Carlin-You Are All Diseased classic from 1999-2000, why do you think you have an immune system.
What a great philosopher and sadly most of that stuff came true.
O/T-Morale was in the tombs and then stopped by the Z blog and comments about the worthless feckless useless Grand Old Politburo (R) Washington Generals had me laughing.

re Immune System: Natural selection is very slow, but very patient. Feedback is immediate: If it doesn't work, you die. Trying to reverse-engineer that jury-rigged, redundant system with its countless feedback loops and adaptive strategies is proving to be quite a puzzle. Of course, we humans are in a lot more of a hurry than Nature is.

There used to be a show called "Venom" IIRC which highlighted various critters and I was struck by how the venom seemed to interrupt the bodies natural processes and cause catastrophic chaos leading to death. The equivalent of the little buggers loosening your lug nuts.
