We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
This song keeps coming to my head after the catastrophe in Maui. Never been to Hawaii, and not an Eagles fan either. I do like the song. "She came from Providence..."
I got to go last year. For me it was a forgettable experience. We had first class accommodations and all that, but you are STILL vacationing in the jungle.
Plus I don't like the ocean. There are too many things out there that want to kill me.
I saw a report from a person likely connected to emergency services and she said that likely 500 and as many as 1000 died in the fires. Many children as schools were closed due to the hurricane winds and they were mostly home alone as the parents still had to go to work. The warning sirens did not work. Also arson and downed power lines contributed to fires.
Arson! Probably. But possibly more than simple arson. It could be sabotage/terrorism. I have to say that Hawaiian police are generally not up for a real investigation. Kind of like the Uvalde police weren't up for dealing with an active shooter in the school. I predict that the press conference will devolve into blaming and denial with little information.
Cliff Mass, U of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Prof has a follow-up blog about the weather aspects of Maui fire that might be of interest to the Maggies community:
No, it's not climate change. Yes, most parts of govt screwed up.
Grass is as deadly a fuel as trees. Wind matters (but they weren't hurricane winds...just downslope acceleration of strong trade winds due to favorable atmospheric conditions).
