Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"I understand everyone wants Britain to win and Germay to lose. But continuing to persist in pursuing that aspiration won’t change the ground truth realities. The course of action that holds out the best hope for Churchill to emerge from this war with Germany retaining its political viability is to agree to a ceasefire so that negotiations can begin.
Even that’s not a guarantee of success, but the longer Britain delays in seeking such an outcome, the greater the chances that Germany continues building strength to launch an invasion this summer or fall, possibly capturing even London. In other words, a stalemate might not be the worst-case scenario for London. Now is the time to develop the diplomatic track to end the war." If Napoleon and Hitler couldn't defeat Russia, I doubt Zelinskyy will have any better success. There's a reason Churchill referred to Russia as "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma" and that's because the Russian way of looking at things is foreign to the Western mind. The Russians can bear what to most people looks like an unbearable beating without cracking.
That coyote article is an anonymous piece of sentimental, anthropomorphic animal rights extremism.
Huh - I didn't see that one coming. I thought is was pretty interesting, including many of the links. Why do you think it's 'animal rights extremism'? Coyotes have been interbreeding for generations now, at least here. The Texas Red Wolves, which I've seen about 30 years ago, almost certainly now have coyote DNA in them. They are the ultimate adapters, and that's what I thought the point of the article was. It didn't look to me like they were advocating much.
I enjoyed it, too.
Lots of coyotes here, often heard at dusk and dawn but rarely seen. Small animals must be brought in at night if they're to survive long. Problems in daytime are exceedingly rare, and I've never heard of a coyote menacing a human being. There was a rash of threatening encounters a year or two ago in North Texas, around the DFW Metroplex. IIRC, at the time, they concluded it had to do with the astonishing growth rates and encroachment on relatively wild lands (rangeland mostly), a product the rate being excessively fast and the scope enormous. I haven't heard anything recently though.
I remember visiting my daughter in N Ft. Worth a few years ago, the rate of large industrial and residential construction made for quite a few oddities - their apartment complex was brand new, a Ross Perot property, a block off I-35W and abutting about a 20-acre rangeland square with a couple of longhorns on it - decorative cattle - but fully developed on all 4 sides. Just a pasture in the middle of a new residential and commercial zone. They would regularly see coyote packs trotting across it, but had no idea where their refuge might be. About 15 years ago I was sitting in a Deer Hunting stand outside of Crawford, Texas enjoying watching a nice size doe with a fawn at her side when I saw a large coyote stalking the fawn. I used my deer rifle to bring down the coyote, it was the largest coyote I had ever shot with a nicer coat than the ones I was used to.
My past experience with coyotes was with animals that were scrawny with thin, mottled hair. Later I was told that the animal I shot might have been more of a red wolf because of its size and fur. I also wondered if it might have been a hybrid part dog and it appeared to have been eating rather well. Now that I am an old man the only hunting I am interested in doing anymore is shooting doves here in Texas. Opening day of dove season is a High Holy day in Texas and we are about six weeks away of September one and looking forward to that special day. https://www.treehugger.com/red-wolf-dna-texas-canines-4864422
I went to the zoo in Ft Worth last year and they had a coyote there. It was much bigger than I was expecting (in my past experience), looked around 50lb to me, much heavier-chested. Either Texas coyotes are getting bigger, or the DNA is being homogenized with other species (which is what I suspect). I have nothing against Coyotes, but the description of our treatment of our friends the dogs is overtly and excessively 'political', as if we collectively and ruthlessly treat them like slaves, while taking insufficient account of the benefits that dogs gain from the relationship.
I don't know where exactly this anonymous (to me, at any rate) author is coming from, but I am wary of certain animal rights activists who regard pet-ownership as a form of slavery, rather than one of mutual benefit and affection and it is a suspicion of this attitude being present in this article, that is where I am coming from. Got it thanks DeGaulle. I'm a dog owner/animal lover, and FWIW I didn't get that drift from it - to me it looked like the author was trying to describe a spectrum's end points and then place the coyote on, it. Looked more like a rhetorical device to me, who knows.
Of course Ukraine cannot "beat" Russia. That has always been true and always been acknowledged. The point of the war for Ukraine is to retain as much of their country as they can and to make the losses to Russia so high that they don't want to come back in a few years to take what is left. Almost without exception all these stories about the war in Ukraine are biased either for or against Ukraine. Yes Ukraine has had big losses of men and equipment second only to Russia's big losses. But somehow that part is left out. Russia will "win" eventually but they will not be able to afford another "win" like that again.
Nor do I see that Ukraine has a heck of a lot of choice. It can make the invasion painful for as long as possible, hoping that eventually Russia will give up or offer survivable terms--or it can give up now and be effectively annihilated. Anyone who can't or won't evacuate and start a new life in another country pretty much has got to fight or die. I don't see the option labeled "cut a deal and survive with anything like a life after this unless everyone I care about can escape over the border at the last minute."
I add the usual caveat that I'm not claiming this settles the question whether the U.S. should be helping, or how much. "Nor do I see that Ukraine has a heck of a lot of choice."
Indeed. This is an existential struggle for Ukraine. It's always very easy for those of us whose own national sovereignty and existence are not in question to pontificate on the matter. Jason Aldean has an opportunity to become the biggest country western singer in history. And the left is incensed. And they pull out the big guns and accuse you of racism. You know the left is angry when they play the race card with zero racism involved. I'm surprised that they couldn't find antisemitism too. But the question is; why is the left in favor of rioting, fire bombing, car jacking and hate???
It's the angry toddler theory of destruction.
Toddler sees a shiny thing - toddler wants to play with it. (Functioning city/state/US is the shiny thing) Adult says ' No, you can't play with that, you don't understand how it works and you'll break it." Toddler throws tantrum, repeatedly, until adult goes: "Okay! FINE! You're gonna bust it up, then you're not going to have it." Toddler starts out carefully - but gets careless, breaks it a bit. Adult goes "I told you, but I'll fix it as best I can." Then toddler insists on having it back. It's THEIRS - and the tantrums continue. Toddler breaks it more. Adult tries to fix, but the damage accumulates. Eventually the adult gives up. Look at Detroit, look at Baltimore, look at Seattle, look at CA. Look at the US - the toddlers SCREAMED for 5 years, while Trump did what he could. That's my theory. YMMV. I think that is mostly correct with one minor correction: Most of the left wing politicians and leaders are actively stealing and defrauding the government and other organizations that they lead or have influence over. Make no mistake Chicago leaders become rich in a few years. Some get careless and even their corrupt judges and DA's can't totally protect them but even when found guilty of their crimes and corruption they get light sentences or no real punishment.
Toddlers protect each other, so to speak, until they go too far...
Neiter the Ukraine, European allies, or the US are equipped to fight a land war with Russia. Russia has an excellent air defense system and nearly limitless and excellent artillery. In a land war the Ukraines simply cannot get close enough with enough long range artillery to do much damage to the Russians.
Russia and China have focused on land warfare and the US has not. We have focused on Air and Sea warfare to protect our shores. The outcome was never in question, only how many Ukraines would be sacrificed by the uniparty neocons in an attempt to breakup Russia and parcel out their resources to the NWO/BBB/WEF oligarchs. Blackrock is already planning the extraction of Ukraines resources if, indeed, anything is left of the Ukraine. "Russia and China have focused on land warfare and the US has not."
And yet Russia's attempted invasion has been a complete fiasco from the outset. They now control most of the ethnic Russian territory they set out to control. They have a land bridge to Crimea. It looks like they might push down to Odessa (another Russian city before the Soviets gave it to Ukraine). Eat any good books lately?
Nice try, but your information operations campaign is a fiasco too.
Are they paying you in rubles or dollars? Why should Russia hurry? Every day there are fewer Ukraines and more western debt. That is a win win for the Russians. And math is very hard for DC to understand.

The article states, "Dr. Clauser has developed a climate model that adds a new significant dominant process to existing models." We can't seem to find Clauser's climate model or ANY scientific publication by Clauser on climate science. Clauser claim on clouds is contradicted by the observational evidence. I would pay real money to see you actually have to live in the dystopian fantasy world you preach about here daily. God knows you've earned it. :)
Lord Heathen: I would pay real money to see you actually have to live in the dystopian fantasy world you preach about here daily.
We reject both utopian and dystopian views. The world is full of sorrow but also full of joy, full of despair but also full of hope. Humans are highly intelligent and highly adaptable. There is every reason to believe they can address the problems of modernity that they face. As for climate, the data is the data. QUOTE: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. — Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

That WSJ article that happiness research is flawed makes me quite happy. The Scandinavians (who reportedly do not do one of the evidenced practices of talking to strangers) routinely top the lists of happiest nations despite objective evidence - like relatively high suicide and alcoholism rates - that they are not. I have railed for years that these studies are a crock. The Scandis are intelligent people who see exactly where these questions are pointing, and are determined to make their countries look good. After all, they are convinced to the point of arrogance that their way of doing things is better than other nations, and they can't let the side down.
Assistant Village Idiot: That WSJ article that happiness research is flawed makes me quite happy.
While the study found methodological flaws in happiness research, it did not apply universally. Some research findings were supported. The World Happiness Report uses a very large data-set and has been taken over a long period of time, so they avoid some of the problems noted in the study noted above. Assistant Village Idiot: The Scandis are intelligent people who see exactly where these questions are pointing, and are determined to make their countries look good. That is certainly possible, but that would presumably apply to most other countries, as well. The World Happiness Report uses data from Gallup on the Cantril ladder method, which asks people to rate their current life situation. See World Happiness Report. Some studies attempt to tease out actual happiness from a bank of questions. Different happiness indexes rank countries somewhat differently, but they tend to result in largely similar rankings, with Finland and Norway near the top and Afghanistan and Syria near the bottom. There is considerable evidence that the fires in Canada are arson. But worse are part of a larger conspiracy, i.e. numerous people were working together to set multiple fires in multiple places at the exact same time in order to make the result much more catastrophic. Now who would do that? Could it be the "asylum seekers" from Muslim countries? I am beginning to think that the compassion that Western countries is prone to show to others is a fatal flaw. This is all just the beginning. As terrorists and Chinese spies flood over our Southern border do you think we won't experience sabotage too? Paris and Canada are burning. Who's next?
