It's fish migration season up here. I was checking out the regulations for Striped Bass on the Atlantic coast.

Locals know that a license for salt-water fishing is now required. The regs on Striped Bass have changed too over recent years. Most recreational fishermen practice catch and release. After all, a good bass will feed 10 people and you don't have ten people coming for supper tonight. If you want to take one home, the Bass needs to be over 25" and under 35". The latter is to protect the big breeding females.

Best fishing for Stripers is night or early morning.

The unfortunte reality is that maybe only half of released catches survive the ordeal. Lots of reasons for that.

However, despite the excellent sport, that's why I only pursue Stripers twice a season.

Bluefish are another subject.

Fly rod or gear?

You can have fun catch and release schoolies on fly.

Big ones with lures or bait. Obviously lures are more fun.

We have them transplanted to our waters in OK. The limit is 5 per day, no size restrictions. You can catch big ones here, but most of them are not that size. A common bait fish for them is rainbow trout, also an introduced species. They're great grilled.

They breed with sand bass to make hybrids. All three are good eating.

I would never release one that big and I've never met anyone who would. Even if I caught five I would keep them and put them in the freezer. Why not?

Frozen fish? OK, fish at the fish store was iced, but why keep a fish you do not mean to eat within 48 hrs?

So you can eat it later. Frozen fish later is better than no fish later. Very little change in taste or texture from freezing.

That’s been our experience. Especially if cooked within short period - say within the month. We have fish every week. So that would never be a problem. We were always thrilled when someone brought us 5 or 10 pounds of cleaned shrimp or crawfish when we lived in Houston.

Tulsa Oklahoma here. Striper fishing, on a fly rod, is great on the Arkansas River right here in Tulsa OK. The Arkansas flows right thru town and there are multiple access points for fisherman. My favorite location is at the Gathering Place--a multi-use recreation and park right along the river. Just upstream at the Keystone Dam tailwaters is also prime water.
