We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. About The Count of Monte Cristo


Yes, Monte Cristo is a small island off the west coast of Italy. Tyrrhenian Sea.


A reader sent the below re the novel. I never put it together - "Dantes" should be a giveaway:



 The novel is much more than an adventure, though, but a story of redemption. Alexandre Dumas structures the tale on the lines of Dante's Divina Commedia. The life of Dantès takes a wrong turn, and he ends up in the Inferno of Chateau d'If, with Abbé Faria playing the part of Virgil. Dantès then enters the Purgatorio of revenge and retribution. Finally cleansed of his hate, Dantès finds the enlightenment of Paradiso.

I read it as a kid. The "meaning" or the authors purpose would have meant nothing to me or perhaps given me a negative view of the book. I like to read adventures I don't need to know the authors inner thoughts. Just my 2 cents.

Another clue is in the title: Mount Christ

The novel is a tale of Christian redemption and the mercy of God. Even non-Christians can find such a story arc inspiring, even if they don’t recognize the roots. It’s a great adventure story on its own—one of the best—but the author is clearly trying to convey more. It works because we care about Dantès. We revel with him as he seeks his revenge, but then grow with him when he learns mercy and forgiveness.

The Brothers Karamazov and The Grand Inquisitor are favorites and those Russian novelists aren't for everyone.
Someone should do one of those change my mind at the playing cards table outside at the park about the banksters with Jesus!
Sorry if it sounds flippant, it is a default cope setting and I hope that wasn't blasphemous.
Would you forgive the banksters and fifth columns?

I first read the Classic Comics Illustrated, a great introduction to this and others classics, now being reprinted and available again.
