Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

QUOTE: Vivek Ramaswamy Debated Gender With Chuck Todd, and It Was Absolutely Bonkers. . . Gender is not a spectrum. Human beings are all unique, and while some men and a woman may be more masculine or feminine than others . . . Um, that's what spectrum means. eeyore: Defending the motte, but we know what your bailey is.
The original claim entailed its own contradiction. You might want to be more specific. There is not only a wide variation, but there is overlap between the categories. You might want to be more honest.
You're deflecting a scientific question by throwing around a cultural definition. That is, if you understand the difference between those two things, which given your past here is open to question. SK: You're deflecting a scientific question by throwing around a cultural definition.
You have actually discovered for yourself how Ramaswamy's position entailed its own contradiction. He conflates cultural gender and biological sex as he slides between discussing chromosomes and behavioral traits of masculinity and femininity. They are not one and same.

V.R. was clearly making the distinction between the two--you are the one who refuses to divide the scientific from the cultural definition.
Your inability to understand his argument doesn't refute it.

Let's look: QUOTE: Chuck Todd: Are you confident that you know that gender is as binary as you're describing it? @VivekGRamaswamy: I am. TODD: Do you know this as a scientist? RAMASWAMY: There are two X chromosomes if you're a woman and an X and a Y... Gender is defined as "the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex". Note how Ramaswamy elides without apparent awareness gender and biological sex.

Zachiepoo, everyone reading this saw your initial response. Stop digging.
At least in your response to me you (more or less) used the word "conflates" properly this time, though simpler language would have been more effective. Now if you could just stop doing it, people might take you a bit more seriously.

A "discussion" in which you're defining "gender" in terms of politics simply to suit your ideology is not constructive--it's reductive.
Sex is determined at the human life stage of a zygote. Let me know when you're ready to discuss facts instead of deflecting from them. Regarding your use of "conflate", I was trying to compliment you. At least be gracious! You've misused the word repeatedly when the word "confuse" would have been proper. I pointed this out some time ago and you're to be commended for being more careful in your usage. If you insist on using the word, you should print that definition and put it on your refrigerator. Consult it a couple of times a day.

We are using the definition found in Merriam-Webster, and, more particularly, as the term was used by the newscaster when posing the question. The fallacy occurs when you, Ramaswamy, Bonchie, and others treat two different concepts as the same in order to fit your preconceptions. That, in turn, led to the contradiction in the statement: "Gender is not a spectrum. Human beings are all unique, and while some men and a woman may be more masculine or feminine than others . . . "

As for the definition of conflate, the definition evolved in the latter half of the twentieth century, with the usage concerning two distinct meanings being confused adopted by Merriam-Webster half a century ago.
QUOTE: Merriam-Webster: Harry the Dog was in the garden weeding his flower beds. Mabel the Cat approached and said: "Harry, what lovely marigolds!" Harry started, speechless for just a moment: "My dear Mabel, these are not marigolds; they are zinnias. I am shocked you would equate the two." To which Mabel responded: "Oh, my dear Harry: I will admit to mistaking the zinnias for marigolds, but to say that I equated the two is a mistake of its own—for, I did not equate them, I conflated them." We appreciate your conservatism with regards to word usage. However, the new usage is close enough to the etymological root of "blow together" to still make sense. And it's use in logic is widespread. So, that ship has sailed, literally.

There was no contradiction, you have simply made a category error. Any man can be masculine of feminine along a very broad spectrum. Any woman can be feminine or masculine to equally broad degrees. The crucial point is that the most feminine man will always remain a man, no matter how much he might attempt to surgically or chemically mutilate himself. The same applies to the opposite sex. Each sex possesses a spectrum, but both sexes are wholly separate from one another. The feminine man who imagines he has magically transformed into a woman has entered into a delusion I do not wish to be coerced into pretending I share.
DeGaulle: Any man can be masculine of feminine along a very broad spectrum.
That's known as gender, "the behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with one sex." DeGaulle: The crucial point is that the most feminine man will always remain a man There's your category error. A feminine male may be a biological male, but by gender be as female as most most biological females.

Let's consider an example. Race is often considered a social construct. That's because humans races are not well-defined biological categories. Instead, culture assigns racial categories, categories which have changed to include or exclude different ethnic and color groups at different times. So, race has "no real existence" in biology, but does exist as a cultural phenomenon.
QUOTE: Benjamin Franklin defines White People: All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. Swedes are too swarthy to be White! And Franklin was more open-minded than most people of his era. Gender is, by definition, referring to the behavioral, cultural, and psychological aspects of sexual differences. For instance, pink used to be considered a color for boys. Today, it has been reassigned to represent girls. Boy toddlers used to wear dresses. Men cry or don't cry, depending on the social milieu. These are cultural phenomena.

Think Lois Lerner. Regarding the unicorn farts, the true essence of the German reaction is buried in the lower half of the article:
"In the first place, electricity prices had gone through the roof in Germany already when rates jumped another 45% the night before they shut down the reactors! " A great example of clickbait, shabby journalism. The story would have been more helpful if it led with the explanation. Why are Germans upset? Their electricity prices were increased by 45% the day before they shuttered 3 perfectly functional modern-design reactors with a sterling safety record. Who wouldn't be upset? I look forward to equitable scoring in the NBA. Short players should get extra points for difficult shots and blocks.
Republicans should get extra votes in the tabulation, to compensate for the relentless hostility of the mainstream media. The mainstream media should be awarded extra ad revenue, as reparation for their unreadable content. re: work rules for welfare

The pentagon gazes into its ideologically distorted crystal ball and sees the future: QUOTE: These are some of the key findings of the 2004 report commissioned by Pentagon defence adviser Andrew Marshall. · Future wars will be fought over the issue of survival rather than religion, ideology or national honour. · By 2007 violent storms smash coastal barriers rendering large parts of the Netherlands uninhabitable. Cities like The Hague are abandoned. In California the delta island levees in the Sacramento river area are breached, disrupting the aqueduct system transporting water from north to south. · Between 2010 and 2020 Europe is hardest hit by climatic change with an average annual temperature drop of 6F. Climate in Britain becomes colder and drier as weather patterns begin to resemble Siberia. · Deaths from war and famine run into the millions until the planet’s population is reduced by such an extent the Earth can cope. · Riots and internal conflict tear apart India, South Africa and Indonesia. · Access to water becomes a major battleground. The Nile, Danube and Amazon are all mentioned as being high risk. · A ‘significant drop’ in the planet’s ability to sustain its present population will become apparent over the next 20 years. · Rich areas like the US and Europe would become ‘virtual fortresses’ to prevent millions of migrants from entering after being forced from land drowned by sea-level rise or no longer able to grow crops. Waves of boatpeople pose significant problems. · Nuclear arms proliferation is inevitable. Japan, South Korea, and Germany develop nuclear-weapons capabilities, as do Iran, Egypt and North Korea. Israel, China, India and Pakistan also are poised to use the bomb. · By 2010 the US and Europe will experience a third more days with peak temperatures above 90F. Climate becomes an ‘economic nuisance’ as storms, droughts and hot spells create havoc for farmers. · More than 400m people in subtropical regions at grave risk. · Europe will face huge internal struggles as it copes with massive numbers of migrants washing up on its shores. Immigrants from Scandinavia seek warmer climes to the south. Southern Europe is beleaguered by refugees from hard-hit countries in Africa. · Mega-droughts affect the world’s major breadbaskets, including America’s Midwest, where strong winds bring soil loss. · China’s huge population and food demand make it particularly vulnerable. Bangladesh becomes nearly uninhabitable because of a rising sea level, which contaminates the inland water supplies. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2004/feb/22/usnews.theobserver1?CMP=share_btn_link re California Could Phase Out Diesel Locomotives
I don't understand how this is going to work. How do you get a "zero emissions" locomotive unless they are powered by batteries, from overhead wire, or hydrogen? Electrifying stretches of railroad is incredibly expensive, which is why it isn't done. I am not sure battery powered locomotives are even feasible, given the loads they must pull. I don't know of any locomotives designed to burn hydrogen, and even if there were, I shudder to think of the cost of the fuel. One would think that due to the operational limitations of these types of locomotives, they would be confined to California, which would mean building engine terminals on the state line so conventional locomotives could replace these engines for movements west of California. It all adds up to a huge needless expense that the rest of the country will pay for in higher freight rates. One wonders of the fate of any steam powered tourist railroad? Will they just have to shut down? Terminate all rail lines at the California border. Move all locomotives and rolling stock and their maintenance facilities (and jobs) out of state. Create roundhouses so that trains can be easily turned around at the border.
Let California bear this cost, not the rest of the country. The ports at LA, San Diego, and elsewhere can die, and other US ports take up the slack. In essence, create a rail quarantine of California. Nothing in by rail, nothing out. If California wants to ship goods, they can truck then across the border to the rail terminals in Nevada or Oregon. If California wants to commit "Amish suicide," let them. Then start on the water pipelines and power grid next. ruralcounsel: The ports at LA, San Diego, and elsewhere can die . . . create a rail quarantine of California
That's just crazy. California has an economy larger than that of France, larger than that of the United Kingdom. California produces the most food of any state, most of which are eaten outside of California. California has the highest net contribution to the federal government. They host the heart of American high-technology industries, including Apple, Alphabet, Intel, Cisco, Oracle, and Meta. Brexit was bad enough, but what you suggest would be disastrous. Hydrogen-powered locomotives! What a great idea! Except that we don't have any hydrogen wells on this planet. You have to make it from water by electrolysis. OK, photoelectric cells for that. Patience, Grasshopper, patience. Hydrogen's energy density (joules/cubic meter) is on the order of 1/10 that of diesel fuel, and that's as a cryogenic liquid, not as a compressed gas. But since it's a locomotive, you can haul a hundred vacuum-insulated tank cars behind the engine to fuel it. And the derailments will be incredible-- absolutely lit, as they say. Literally.
Don't be shocked if some goofball out there actually recommends this. re Vivek Ramaswamy Debated Gender With Chuck Todd, and It Was Absolutely Bonkers

SCOTUS Grants Review of Case That Will Gut the Federal Bureaucracy
QUOTE: In the biggest news to come out of the Supreme Court of the United States since Roe v. Wade was overturned, the Court has granted a review of Loper Bright Enterprises vs. Raimondo. In its deliberations, the court will deal with the question of whether to overrule the infamous Chevron Doctrine, a ’70s-era precedent that granted broad powers to the bureaucratic state to interpret vague, often narrow statutes with near zero accountability. …Here is the question: “whether the Court should overrule Chevron or at least clarify that statutory silence concerning controversial powers expressly but narrowly granted elsewhere in the statute does not constitute an ambiguity requiring deference to the agency.” https://redstate.com/bonchie/2023/05/01/scotus-grants-review-of-case-that-will-gut-the-federal-bureaucracy-n739579 @ Feeble,
