Driving home tonight listening to NPR. News segment comes on. Commentator relates the story of the school shooting and goes into moderately complete detail, with the exception of the deranged child-killer's Transgender self-identification. This self-identification has been confirmed by the police, but it's not a fact worth reporting as far as NPR is concerned, even though the associated rage is what drove the killing episode.

NPR made a 2-3 second reference to 'mental health' issues. That was it. NPR has become a parody of itself.

The shooter had identified her guns as "shooting things," not guns. There is debate over whether she killed kids with a shooting thing versus a gun. This is very controversial, as gun advocates favor calling her shooting things, "shooting things" versus gun control advocates who refer to the shooter's things as "guns." There is no known organization that advocates for "shooting-thing" control.

"Big Think" needs to learn how to think. The writer himself doesn't understand relativity. I wouldn't take any condescending advice on Einsteinian relativity from a site that proclaims that "moving clocks tick more slowly than stationary ones". The fundamental point of the theory of relativity is that the speed of light is the only fixed point of reference. No clock can be stationary, as all clocks are moving relative to one another. This shows the absurdity of the old example that if a twin moved to another part of the galaxy at near light speed and then returned to Earth, he'd find his twin brother had died of old age, while he remained young-of course, his twin brother, along with the Earth would have been relatively moving away from his space-craft. Maybe Einstein's theory is more of an exercise in mathematics than one of reality?

There are actually three inertial frames: the Earth, the outgoing astronaut, and the incoming astronaut. They will all agree on the age of the astronaut.

The observance of time dilation doesn't have anything to do with the case presented on Big Think, and you have completely missed my point and gone off on some irrelevant tangent. His mistake is to assume one clock can be taken as stationary. In the relativistic view, nothing is stationary and all measurements must be taken relative to the movement of bodies being measured against and even in relation to the measuring devices used.

There are not 'three inertial frames', as the earthbound twin shares the same position and momentum as the earth on which he stands. If one was to assume the two as separate, one would also have to take the other twin's spaceship as another 'inertial frame'.

The outgoing astronaut and the incoming astronaut are in different inertial frames. The astronaut undergoes acceleration when changing direction. There are three inertial frames: The observer on Earth, the outgoing astronaut, and the incoming astronaut.

You are claiming the observer on Earth and the astronaut are symmetrical, but that is not the case. The astronaut changes direction, leaving one inertial frame of reference and entering another. The astronaut experiences acceleration when he changes direction, something he can measure with an accelerometer.

Here's a statement of the twin paradox by someone on the internet, DeGaulle: "a twin moved to another part of the galaxy at near light speed and then returned to Earth". Returning requires a change of direction, and a change of direction means a change in the frame of reference.

If DeGaulle isn't a sufficient citation, here's another:

Consider a traveling twin moving at 0.99995c for a distance of 1 light-year as measured from Earth, then returning. It might be helpful to remember that the Earth and the destination are in the same reference frame.

The traveler would observe the distance is contracted to 0.01 light-years, so the journey would take just over .01 years by his clock. The homebound twin, on the other hand, wouldn't observe the traveler's arrival at the destination for ~2 years, the just over one year journey it takes to travel one light-year at nearly the speed of light and the one year it takes the light to return from one light-year away. Once returning home, the traveling twin would note his clock is now at ~.02 years (twice ~.01 years). The homebound twin would see the arrival at just over 2 years on his clock. But, amazingly, the traveling twin would appear to show up just after he was seen to have turned around! (This isn't superluminal velocity: the traveler had already left on the return trip a year before the homebound twin observed the turnaround.)

What's also interesting is that, looking at the others' clocks from a distance, when the twins are separating, the others' clock would appear to be slowed; while the others' clock would appear sped up when they are approaching.

(None of this requires considering general relativity, but is explained entirely with special relativity.)

It's relative. If you were on a space ship going 0.6 times speed of light and approached by a space ship going 0.6 times the speed of light you should be able to measure that the closing speed is 1.2 times the speed of light but what you would measure is that the closing speed is sub light speed. What is wrong in the equation is that light or a substitute for light is used to measure the speed and it fails at speed approaching the speed of light and it tends to also distort measurement of mass and time. There isn't a substitute measurement medium so we cannot "prove" either option. Most people who study this simply accept the measurement as correct and ponder all the discrepancies that choice creates. A few agree that the measurement method is faulty. The vast majority simply argue against any explanation because they earned something different in college.

The relative velocity would be about 88% of the speed of light. (v1+v2)/(v1*v2/c^2)

Except that there are real world implications of relativity, such as the change in the half-life of particles under acceleration. Indeed, GPS won't work without accounting for both Special Relativity and General Relativity.

A key to understanding why measuring the speed of light using light or it's surrogates is to think of how a deaf man might determine the speed of sound and if an airplane might exceed that speed. If a fighter jet flies over you at mach 2 and your eyes are closed you can track it across the sky but your finger pointing at where the sound is coming from will be significantly behind the jet. AND your pointing finger will chart a course at about the speed of sound. Because that is how you are determining it's speed and the sound reaches you at the speed of sound no matter how fast the jet is flying.

Then the media can go to every government building in DC showing those ac units being ripped out. We know that won’t happen because these tyrannical authoritarians know that the climate isn’t in crisis, they just want to act on their jackbooted thuggery impulses.

Did you happen to catch Brandon’s 75 vehicle motorcade in Canada? The dipstick was going to a conference on the environment. To talk about the doom that is just around the corner unless we eat bugs and live in a teepee. Apparently the 80 or so vehicle’s is a normal thing. What a huge carbon footprint. Lead by example, Joe. That's not how most regulation of manufacturing works. Rather, new products must meet the new standard, but old products are grandfathered in. There's a transition period as old products eventually wear out and are replaced.

Next thing you know, they'll be requiring seat belts in new cars, insulation on electrical wiring, and buildings that don't fall down on people (Hammurabi 229).

Executive orders are subject to law and court review. In this case, it's a regulation pursuant to 42 U.S. Code Chapter 77 and enacted under the Administrative Procedure Act 5 U.S. Code §§ 551–559.

You don't get people willing to defend the country when you've been telling them that the country they live in is a horrible, horrible place.

The DEI people are happily destroying it all in favor of their ideology. But what do they think will happen when they've reached their goal - and everyone completely distrusts everyone else? The military RUNS on trust - that everyone knows and does their jobs, that everything is ready and arrives on time when it's needed (logistics is key in modern warfare) - and DEI destroys that.

Well, it'll be interesting seeing what happens, in the 'Man, what a flippin' train wreck' sort of way...

Travel between the stars would be very impractical at several times the speed of light, so we can only know that it's not going to happen under classical physics. Not to mention you would get obliterated by space debris along a blind four light year trail for starters. It would take very little.

But we don't know what may be possibly under quantum physics. If quantum entaglement can exist, and it does, it already violates what we understand, or perhaps are capable of understanding. Considering the immensity of space and time it's unlikely that those little green bipeds have not been zipping about poking into things for billions of years.

A traveler moving at near light speed would experience only a short period of time between stars due to the contraction of distance. As you note, it wouldn't be practical for any number of reasons.

However, that doesn't mean colonists over generations couldn't populate the galaxy. Consider sub-light travel on ships capable of sustaining life during the transit, or just eggs that are hatched on arrival. The colonists could travel for a century between destinations, take a few centuries to populate their new world and prepare for the next voyage. Call it a millennium per jump of a light year. The Milky Way is 100,000 light years across. So, if our colonists started on one corner of the galaxy, they could population the entire galaxy in about 100 million years. While not a negligible amount of time, it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility in a galaxy that is billions of years old. If dinosaurs had become spacefaring creatures, they could already be there.

I don't think that the author understood "McCarthy affair,". To begin with McCarthy was right. Many of the communist in our government then were in powerful positions and they used their power to destroy McCarthy. After they destroyed hi they changed many of the "facts" around what happened.
