We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

How to kill a fish humanely

Stunning might be the easiest way. Why let the fish suffer? For a smaller fish, just whack their head against something.


Another common way is to stick a knife into the gill area and let them bleed out. That's not easy with a big fish.


I know some people use a firearm on large Makos. What do you do?

Call me cruel, but when I bobber-fished with my Dad in the '30s and '40s we just severed the spine as we cut the heads off in the first step of cleaning. These were palm size bluegill and crappie. That's how everybody I ever saw cleaning panfish did it back then. I never cleaned fish as an adult

Musky fisherman here. As a kid we always had a billy club in the boat. You don't want a big musky thrashing around in the boat so the dispatch was quick. One of my Dad's fishing partners was a State Policeman and he carried his service revolver to take care of the task.

Not really a fisherman myself, all my fishing has been with my brother in law. Mostly I drive the boat, smoke a cigar (or two) and watch him fish. His approach is to get the keepers in the boat, whack them on the head with a small baseball bat shaped thing, and then bleed them out over the side. Efficient.

I don't like to hit my fish or stab them while they're still alive. I'm a coward. I have an ice chest full of ice water. It's freezing. I fish in South Florida. The ice water stuns them and they go peacefully just like Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. However, I have started removing the Barb on my hooks. If I'm not going to eat fish that day. People catch and release and use a barbed hook are doing the fish any favors. It's actually hard to find hooks without barbs. I grind them off with a dremel.
