Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wouldn't "food addiction" be required to reach age 50?
This story was more about food bias. I.e. the doctor has a bias against "processed foods" and therefore you should too. She is a Karen in a lab coat. I think I know what most people mean by "processed foods". I think they mean that in the combination of ingredients are various "chemicals" and when you read the label it's kind of a turn off. But I am reminded of the ;ist someone made of all the chemicals in an apple and it too was a bit of a turn off.
I would prefer some sort of evidence based discussion rather than simply biased opinions. Where is the evidence that Macaroni and cheese is killing us or Campbells soups are poisoning our children? At the very least instead of some braod category, "processed foods", list every food item you can purchase over the counter and then list the science based evidence of harm or benefit. Are Tootie Fruities killing our children or is some crazed "natural food nut" simply ranting mindlessly. I could be wrong but I think the single most dangerous food sold at your local supermarket is a grapefruit. Anyone taking medication can vouch for that. Maybe peanuts would be second. But other than that I doubt all the wild ass claims of various foods being "bad" for you. I don't think of processed foods--stuff like Hamburger Helper, Chef Boy-ar-dee spaghetti, or bottled ice tea--as "bad" foods so much as sad foods. If you can read the list of ingredients and immediately turn that into a recipe--sans preservatives, emulsifiers, and a whole lotta salt and grease--you should be cooking it from scratch.
Oh. Unless contraindicated by your meds, there's no breakfast beverage quite as tasty as a ruby-red grapefruit juice mimosa. It's fruit! It's a health drink! Well that was my point! If you look at the chemicals in an apple or any unprocessed food it is a very long list of scary names. The difference is that food producers are required to name everything they put into a package but not required to list the chemicals in natural foods. This scares some people who are afraid of emulsifiers or other named ingredients.
As for salt in grease/fat I love them. I eat a pot roast or prime rib and savor the fat. I love butter and slather it thickly on my rolls or bread. Most people do. What is wrong with grease/fat and salt? I like grapefruit but grapefruit is contraindicated by almost any medication. I love peanut butter but for some people it is poison. I love dairy products and again for some people it is poison. But in general food is food and once it gets past your belly your body has no clue where it came from or what the label says. Just choose your grease and fat carefully. For example, butter is great, but margarine might as well be motor oil. As are most of the oils in supermarket prepared foods. A canny home cook works with a tastier, healthier palette of oils, from olive oil to bacon grease. And I'll salt my own damn food, thank you.
Well, they are certainly floundering around on this issue!
We'll be here all week...try the veal! We're just doing this for the halibut.

re Whale Corpses Are Stacking Up But the Libs Won't Talk About What Might Be Killing Them
I imagine it is no different than windmills chopping up eagles and other birds, or solar farms burning them out of the sky. . It's okay to kill the whales as long as you re saving the planet. Turns out libs don't care so much about wildlife after all. The Mainstream Media Admits That We Are Facing "The Worst Food Crisis In Modern History"
https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/mainstream-media-admits-we-are-facing-worst-food-crisis-modern-history The food crisis is accelerating and most honest observers believe that it is intentional. Even if that is too sinister to accept you must acknowledge that world leaders seem uninterested in taking any actions to mitigate it. So why are we fostering a worldwide food crisis? People are dying right now in Africa and other poor countries because of food shortages that seem to be intentional. Why are we doing nothing to fix it. Because it will cause massive immigration into wealthier countries which will destroy them.
California's plan to power EVs has one glaring shortcoming
Maggie's readers all know what that is. But this is interesting: QUOTE: The first phase of EV mandates begins in 2026 when 35 percent of new 2026 car models sold must be zero-emission. What the state isn’t telling its residents is how they plan to enforce that and who will decide which 65% of shoppers will still be able to purchase gas-powered vehicles. https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2023/01/30/californias-plan-to-power-evs-has-one-glaring-shortcoming-n527352 That's only three years away. University Removes Slave-Owning Benefactor's Name, His Family Demands Their $51 Million Back
Here's a pro tip for folks who want to make those big donations. Instead of donating directly to an institution that may repay you with ingratitude in the future, make your donation through a separately managed donor-advised fund. This allows you to turn donations on and off at your pleasure. I use the American Endowment Foundation, but I'm sure your financial advisor has a list of funds to meet your charitable inclinations. The Covid yarns ... Now there is a good place to start cutting the federal budget back to an appropriate size.
