We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

A free ad for the White Lotus series


Mrs. BD thinks it is a genius series. Three separate groups of wealthy Americans take a trip to Taormina and stay at the same grande lux hotel. (the most touristy town in Sicily, the only one which I have avoided in my trips to Sicily for that reason). Then things happen.


Give it a try. I don't need too, because the story has been realated to me at length.

I apologize in advance if this sounds negative. Perhaps it is really a call for help. Anyway...

In years past I have seen HBO and may have even had access to it with my cable system. Today I have no clue how I would watch it even though I suspect it is streaming over the internet.

I am a "Prime" member in Amazon, my Prime membership is included in my cell service and it is handy when I order something from Amazon so I'm OK with that. Every now and then I get an email telling me I'm missing something on Prime and I follow the links and it is generally free Ebooks, movies etc. So I peruse what they are offering and see nothing worth my time. Maybe there is something there I would like but I don't see it. It's mostly girly books and movies.

Then there is netflix. I think that years ago I have used netflix but don't remember how. For a couple bucks less I could see a new movie but on my small TV with poor sound. Now I don't know where Netflix resides but I assume I have to pay monthly and that if I searched their offerings I would see more girly movies and stuff to make me wretch. But I don't know because I no longer know where netflix lives.

I also think that there are other subscription streaming things that I am simply unaware of because I'm not young and hip so the crowd I hang out with talks about their grand kids, their poor health and the latest friend who died.

What I need is a guide of sorts. In most cases I don't know where to look and when I do know where to look I can't find anything. I never heard of White Lotus, I have never heard of all the other subscription shows that are out there somewhere. But that being said I don't like soap operas, Like Yellowstone etc. If the entire purpose of the show is to hook me in to watching next week I'm outa there. I like shows and movies that have a beginning and an end and are interesting.

What the world needs is a guide for everyone over age 50 or so. Otherwise it doesn't exist because no one I know talks about it and you have to know something about it to go look for it.

JustMe: You don't seem like the type of guy who enjoys watching TV shows about dysfunctional people. With all due respect to Mrs. BD, White Lotus sounds terrible to me. "An all-star cast head to a resort and unleash their worst, most privileged impulses. The series is a sharp social satire following the exploits of various guests and employees of the fictional White Lotus resort chain, whose stay becomes affected by their various dysfunctions". If I ever wanted to see dysfunctional people, I'd just watch the evening news.

Maybe it's Mrs. BD's guilty pleasure.
Odds are if it's a modern show within the last 10 years you aren't missing anything and not worth the effort to find more only to be disappointed. The Critical Drinker says it better on youtube.

JustMe, You're not alone. There are many of us who haven't kept up with technology, but I don't think we're really missing much. I believe you have to pay for a cable tv account and then pay an additional fee to access HBO. The cost doesn't seem worth it to me. When I'm away from home at a place where there's cable hook up I usually have a hard time finding anything worthwhile to watch besides a few of the travel shows, Rick Steeves comes to mind.

I agree with Grant1863 that most of the contemporary shows are awful and a waste of time.

The White Lotus got a lot of buzz on social media when it came out. The buzz seemed like a marketing campaign and the premise of the show didn't sound promising, so I skipped it. I recently watched both seasons after my sister recommended it.

I found it to be a very watchable show. Watchable to me means that it portrays people in a plausible way. There is none of what The Critical Drinker on Youtube calls, "the message". The cast is diverse, but in a natural and normal way. And SPOILER ALERT: the bad guys are the gays. That doesn't really ruin anything, since you won't see it coming.

It's good to see a show where older folks don't act like defective humans, and Jennifer Coolidge really does do a splendid job. The show has some sexual themes that are a bit graphic, but very short and necessary to the plot.
