We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Not just the arts! I had an engineering director who sometimes, when philosophically inclined, talked about the melancholy reality of engineering - so many projects that you work on are either cancelled or, if they do reach completion, never get any traction in their intended market, whether that's internal or external customers. There's a lot of competition, indeed.
Exactly my experience, Jim. When I was an engineering manager I remember counseling a despondent software developer (after his project was canceled) that almost all projects fail in the marketplace or are killed off before they even get there, and that in my entire career I had had only one thing I designed go into production and make money. That perspective made it easier for him move on.
Occasionally I wonder if I have a next/new all-time favorite album/book/movie out there buried in obscurity, or just because I haven’t been paying attention. Looks like sometimes just could be collecting dust somewhere for financial or artistic reasons. All those reasons suck.
Melody is the most elusive of creative requirements. This piece has no melody. It doesn't even have a barb. So yes, it is entirely forgettable.
Or you may say, if that is your inclination, that this is the greatest forgettable piece never to make it.
