Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Gazprom Declares Force Majeure, Will Halt Gas Flows To Germany Indefinitely https://www.zerohedge.com/energy/gazprom-declares-force-majeure-will-halt-gas-flows-germany-indefinitely Germany's Energy Crisis About To Get Even Worse As Rhine Water Levels Plummet https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/germanys-crisis-about-get-even-worse-rhine-water-levels-plummet This is a transportayion bottlemeck caused by low river levels. Barge loads have been cut by 2/3 to avoid running aground. The rails lack the capacity to pick up the slack. Dr. Jordan Peterson has a great analogy of Woke Organizations. It's a story about zebra herds; of course zebras have uniquely visible markings, unlike almost any other veldt mammal, whose markings are generally designed for protective camouflage.
A group of scientists was studying zebra herd behavior, and also the predatory behavior of lions, on these herds. Lions have occasional success with hunting zebras. The scientists decided to mark an individual zebra with red paint so that they could easily distinguish it from the surrounding herd, and thus make observations on its unique behaviors. But as soon as they did, the lions converged on the marked zebra and took it down very quickly. Thus, the beneficial effect of the zebra's markings became apparent: The similarity of their markings made it impossible for the lions to target an individual cooperatively. Once they could, hunting success was greatly facilitated. Peterson concludes that Woke Organizations function in a similar way - their jingoism is a code of behavior designed for the Woke herd, to protect it from criticism or demands for objective discourse from their critics. But it's a mistake to think this kind of false Solidarity makes them immune. re Unsustainable Sri Lanka
I should have saved the link. I just read a comment that avers organic farming is still "sustainable". Like the belief in Global Warming, I expect efforts to move agriculture to "organic" will continue as if the diasaster in Sri Lanks never happened. From the liked article: Sri Lankans are starving so that Western environmentalists can preen. One mustn't forget that the real goal of the environmental church is to get rid of two-legged carbon units. That's the final solution to reducing CO2 emissions. Organic farming IS sustainable. If 25% or more of your population are organic farmers providing all the food we need is sustainable. But I'm not sure you can get 25% of the population to willingly become organic farmers AND I'm not sure you can have a 1st world nation under those circumstances.
I read somewhere that in Russia 40%-50% of the food consumed in Russia is food that the individual families grow themselves. It is both a necessity and a lifestyle for them. I used to have an organic "hobby farm". We had horses and chickens and rabbits and composted the manure and spread it on the garden. It really improved the soil but a hobby was all it was. I can't imagine making a going concern out of it.
Organic farming IS sustainable. If 25% or more of your population are organic farmers providing all the food we need is sustainable.
If I may take the liberty of opposing your point of view, I don't see how that statement can be true. You can't substitute human labor for fertilizer. No matter how many humans you have hoeing and weeding, if the crop doesn't have sufficient nutrients, yields will be sub par. That goes for the victory gardens you describe as well. While they will mitigate a food shortage, they won't produce to their full potential without adequate plant nutrients. Without fertilizer the resulting yields will just be a microcosm of Sri Lanka. On a small scale organic farmers do exactly that. That is through their labor the generate fertilizer. Many small farmers have been doing this for generations and their land still produces. It is very difficult to scale up so it is easier to remain a small family operation. There is an interesting example: A man, one individual, spends his summers in Maine and his winters in Florida where he rents/barters property to farm organic greens and vegetables for restaurants and home sales. In his Florida operation he bartered with half a dozen of his neighbors to use their front and/or back yards to grow his crops. Most of them do this in return for vegetable and greens from his farming operation. He makes about $3000 a month profit. It is 100% organic because that is his selling point. I wish I had a link to this article but I read it years ago and didn't keep a link.
I am not advocating "organic" farming but I do enjoy growing my own foods. I don't do it currently because I live in a travel trailer, sold my house two years ago. But I may do it again after Biden crashes the economy and housing market I may buy another home. When will they figure out that reducing U.S. Carbon Dioxide emissions is pointless? It's not pointless, it allows the elites to enforce power over the deplorables. Always remember, you are the carbon they want to reduce.
