Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

It is wrong to use these as news and political fodder. It encourages copycats, and, worse, it makes every odd kid a potential suspect. Psychiatry has nothing to offer with this other than opinions on TV. These adolescent or late-adolescent boys never get to Psychiatrists, and even if they did there would be little to do. None would tell a doctor that their dream is to shoot up a school.

I agree. Design the building better. Not like a fortress but with good doors which can be locked from the main office with a indicator, green or red light, for each door. some simple training for teachers and staff to make the most of security features. Good access for police and fire personnel. Perhaps two doors for every classroom each to different corridor systems so that in addition to locking an intruder out of a classroom that there would be an avenue of escape when needed.
You have to have lots of doors for emergency exits. But there are levels of security for door hardware & latches. Design fit for purpose; procedures in.place with training and competencies to support; regular audits and closeout of corrective actions; and lots of drills. That's what it takes. You know what's missing? Political will. $40 billion of which just went to another country.
Good summary of the real issues. But it's so much fun to pretend it's just obvious what to do is we only cared and were willing to stand up to those evil gun-obsessed people. Cheap righteousness.
Related: that Beto O'Rourke continues to be popular is evidence that Texas Democrats are children who admire the kid who postures in front of the vice-principal. These are not serious adults. Keep weed away from teenagers; even if that means no recreational weed for adults.
Mammas, don’t let your babies hang out with the ef-bee-ayyy…
Single point of entry. Armed security. Protect our schools like we protect our airports and federal buildings. Why hasn’t this been implemented yet?
There is no "magic fix" for anything else either.
Welcome to reality. Adjust. Just as importantly we should understand that school shooting is rare. Yes take common sense measures to make schools safer but understand that your kids are more likely to die in a school bus accident than a school mass shooting. The reason this doesn't seem true is because a school mass shooting is like winning a political lottery and it is exploited on TV for days to weeks. If 19 kids died in a school bus accident the kids would be just as dead but not a single politicians would call for ending school bussing. Not a single parent would form an organization to place limits on school bussing. Because there is not political value in those deaths. Simple as that.
Your kids are a thousand times more likely to die of a drug overdose than a mass school shooting. Shouldn't there be 1000 times more stories about drug deaths on TV? No! Because that does not fit a political agenda. I keep wondering whether any of these shooters were given Ritalin during their school years.
And there was no "magic fix" for airline hijackings. Or church shootings in Texas, either.
The magic fix to stop school shootings is to cut every federal employees salary by 50%.
Single point of entry by students and staff. All other doors will be emergency doors tied to fire alarm system to keep people from propping doors open for ventilation, etc. That happened in this case. Main entry doors are protected by concrete filled steel posts or concrete planters. Even Walmart does this as it keeps vehicles from crashing through entry that may be carrying explosives. School grounds should have security fence around perimeter to keep gangs and non-students out of building. After students enter set main entry doors to only open from inside. Access key for first responders.
If you have ever worked in an airport you can see the security measures they take. Unfortunately, none of this is fool proof but it does improve security. All students on depression or behavioral drug prescriptions need to be monitored closely and have no access to weapons. What about recess? I like the idea of secure doors and all but at what point does the school more resemble a prison than a place of learning and great childhood experience?
I recognize that the politics make this incident a national disaster that requires taking away every right known to man and the media belief that if it bleeds it leads and all of this seems world endingly terrible. But in the 48 hours or so since this happened about 300-400 kids have been killed by other things and this kinda "natural" death of people will continue day in and day out forever without a single news story. Yes it's sad, yes I feel for the parents, yes crazy people shouldn't have guns, but please recognize that this has been blown all out of proportion for one reason only and that is to usher in the inevitable conversion from a Democratic Republic to a Marxist/socialist country to be soon followed by communism. THAT IS WHAT YOU SHOLD BE AFARID OF!!! If the 100 or so kids that died during this same 48 hour period from drug overdoes and the 50-60 that died from texting while driving and the other hundred or so that died from other "preventable" cause didn't bother you than WHY are you letting yourself be led around by the nose by the Democrat socialist of America??? WAKE UP! It's not a security issue.
Kids in rural/suburban American got guns and went shooting in earlier decades. No massacres. This is a mental health issue caused by the breakup of the family and weakening of community ties. It won't be solved with fences. I am sure medication - legal as much as illicit - also plays a part. |
