We had a major incoming flight of warblers Friday night, so Sat. morning was full of warbler calls. I only know the calls of the most common warblers, but it is better to learn their calls rather than straining your neck for an hour to peer into the treetops.

Interestingly, that same flight left last night and there is nary a warbler this morning. Birders love those big flights that arrive overnight.

If you have poor memory for bird song, there is an iPhone app for that: Merlin Bird ID. It is not 100% accurate - but what is?

We tried the Merlin (free version) Sunday, and liked it very much.

Here in my neck of the woods (SF) a couple of different warbler types show up around February and stay through the middle of April. Thompson's Warbler is the most common. They are very shy, and tend to favor hanging out where there is cover. When it comes to their singing they give the house finches a run for their money.

I also recommend an app called GoBird. It's GPS based, so when you travel you can refresh and see what species are in the new location. Lots of pics of each bird and a nice selection of calls.

I learned all the Central Ohio bird calls over a couple of years, in support of bike riding communting, which involves huge access to bird calls. I also learned all the wildflowers aka weeds.

Then I stopped paying attention to either and now I know practically none. It takes a few years.
