Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Educators who are into teaching kids that pleasure trumps all other considerations might want to consider teaching them about the pleasures of independent thinking, autodidactic habits, financial independence, religious faith, and self-esteem based on real accomplishment.
Suggest such a thing and you'll suddenly hear that there are things in life worth more than mere pleasure, and that children must learn the self-discipline to avoid temptation by wrong philosophies--all relativism abruptly abandoned. "Your mistaken ideas are literally killing me!" One of the oldest heresies is narcissism. How can you love and do for others, when your entire focus is on yourself?
The democrats and hollywood...the wokers and tokers.
I like the idea of a DeSantis/Trump ticket in 2024, with Trump as VP serving as the ultimate impeachment insurance.
It'll never happen, given Trump's ego, but that is a fun thought. It does work the other way too, though less well. If you're into late-night campfire ember fantasies you could make that one into impeachment=10 years of DeSantis too, if you really like the guy. You might need some weed for that, though.
Do liberals not understand that by saying DeSantis is worse than Trump they are helping him in Republican primaries with those voters who don't pay much attention to the news? Y'know, people who have 60-hr/week jobs and families and stuff. They'll hear that and go "Really? Maybe I should look into this guy, then." Constitutional issue with a Trump/DeSantis ticket. The Twelfth Amendment states that if both the President and Vice-Presidential candidates are from the same state, they cannot recieve electoral votes from that state. Since DeSantis and Trump both reside in Florida, they'd have to sacrifice all of Florida's electoral votes, which would be deadly for a Republican ticket.
The Electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves; Ahh, there you go then. Put the campfire out, gents.
Pharmaceutical ads: They are required to mention the worst side-effects, which typically include such as kidney failure, sepsis, sudden death, and anaphylactic shock.
The contrast between the hair-raising warning voiceovers and the slow-motion, touchy-feely visuals featuring smiling oldsters, happy grandchildren, and excited puppies is hilarious. But, the drug companies wouldn't pay to create and run them if they didn't think that getting patients to nag their physicians to prescribe them relatively unproven, expensive drugs didn't work. I sometimes find it hard to believe that there are sufficient people with the conditions described to justify the specific advertising. Combining that with your observation leads me to think that the advertising is more targeted to generating a general feeling that "if they make a pill for *that*, there's a pill for what ails me."
QUOTE: From Obama & ABC's HealthCare propaganda show...Obama's tells woman that maybe her elderly mother shouldn't have received that pacemaker - maybe she should have just taken a pain pill (and died)... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rin4h4cRs6Y But most of these drugs are for disease commonly associated with older people, aren't they - which means that 'guess who' is footing the Medicare bill.
They should ban television advertising of lawyers and drugs as a public nuisance. which is precisely what they have become. Lawyers should be allowed to advertise. However, if they mention the dollar amount of a verdict, they should also be required to reveal the amount actually collected and the amount they deducted from any settlement for fees and expenses.
On the Gadde story "....she recalls learning later that her out-of-work chemical-engineer father was advised by a boss to get permission from a local Ku Klux Klan leader to go door to door collecting insurance premiums.....That would have been the late seventies. Are we supposed to believe there was an omnipotent Klan in Texas in 1977?".
The Klan was very much active in that time, into the 80's - I know because I drilled a number of wells in that area through the early 80's. There was even a Klan bookstore in the nearby 'sundown town', Vidor, one of the worst places in the South to be black. But to be accurate, they were by no means running things to the extent of granting municipal permissions. My take is that the story is likely embellished to establish 'protected' status, but the journalist's take is woefully under-informed and the far worse offense. I've always heard that there was Klan pocket surviving in Vidor in far SE Texas. I never heard reports of such a thing outside that small town.
Ah, California. The land where all of our problems seem to originate from. It is the land where the most progressive lefty ideas are incubated and birthed. The bad ideas spread like a cancer throughout the West. Millions of dollars spent on homelessness and the problem grow exponentially. The money isn’t going to solve the problems, it goes to leaches in the non-profits. Take a look at Californias energy policies. Rolling blackouts, high costs. Sec. Of Energy, Granholm, says it is the model for the rest of the country. Lefties need to be run out of government, at all levels.

Personal nastiness is for state school kids. Harvard-quality students know: (1) the real hit comes from blacklisting i.e., what they do is irrelevant; and (2) there is no reason to burn bridges just in case this person proves useful in the future. Constitutional issue with a Trump/DeSantis ticket. I thought Trump lives in New Yahk.
