Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, February 13. 2022Been to church today? We occasionally attend our friends' church's Sunday service (streamed). It is called The Church of the City New York. Fired up for Jesus - lots of praise music. Pastor is as compelling as Tim Keller. He begins talking around the 45-min mark.

I noted this morning that our worship team looks a lot like Josie and the Pussycats. Which is fine with me. Guys in the back as drummer and bass. All very talented. Not quite my style, but I like all styles pretty well and the hymn-singing has gone sour as the choir has aged. I love me those hymnal bass lines, but half-hearted tentative worship isn't really worship at all.
For preaching I don't require entertainment, and in fact it makes me nervous. But I do think that teachers who don't even care if they are boring are bringing a certain arrogance to the table. It's not about how smart you are and your great learning, Jasper. Preach to the congregation you have, not to the imaginary one you wish you had. Finally went to church on Christmas Eve after being away from the church for a couple of years due to the wokeness of the Methodist church we had attended for years. Church wasn't church any more. The Lutheran church we attended on Christmas Eve gave us peace again as it was a very traditional service with none of the modern hoopla we have come to dislike. Even my spouse liked the service and I never though I would get us to church again. After service said "now this is how church is supposed to be". Family member is having difficulty as spouse has decided to have them attend the Methodist church of wokeness all in full display on Sunday morning. What a shame...........not church any more.
I’ll stick to the Divine Liturgy. But thanks for the invite.
Our Anglican parish is - very cowardly - not holding proper services until the end of the month. Suspect it's the diocese who's dictating this, but seriously not impressed.
Honestly can’t think of anything that would make me less likely to attend church than a service like that. Would rather eat glass.
The miraculous thing is that, inasmuch as you are not like everyone else, nor they like you, He knows this and provides a Way to accommodate EVERYONE'S PREFERENCES! “Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings” (1 Corinthians 9:19–23). So, if you are repelled by such a service, find one in which you feel at home, or don't bother, but seek communion with Him individually, through His Word, the Bible. He knows what you like and how best to communicate with you. Or so I believe.
In my church if the homily lasts 15 minutes, then the priest would be considered long winded. That was a very, very long sermon.
When I was a kid I went to church every Sunday. I enjoyed the singing but not the preaching. Even then as a child I knew they were lying but didn't know if they knew they were lying. Today I accept that some of them are just stupid and actually believe that crap but many are simply using the church as a path to social status and power. SO how do you sit there and listen to baseless lies knowing that they are playing you and walk out content with that? Do you really think there is a heaven or a hell where all the souls that ever lived reside? Do you really think there is a god who created all of this and sits in judgement? Seriously? And if you are smart enough to know this is all pure baloney why would you want to listen to someone who believes it OR worse who doesn't believe it but is playing you???
You seem to have learned how to read minds and motives of other people. Remarkable. I thought only liberals believed they could do that.
Babies can read your mind, your facial expressions and your intentions. It is a human trait. If you told me that you believed that you were Queen Elizabeth it would be 100% accurate to say either you are lying or you are stupid. The intriguing question is which. Was I sitting in the pew watching a priest lie or was he too stupid for me to be listening to his opinions?
I can read your mind! And I'm probably more correct than YOU are. You are like the guy on the highway going 15 miles over the speed limit looking for one more car to pass before zipping to the right to take his exit. Except for you it is a search for someone you can correct or ridicule. Every morning you get up smug in your superiority search the internet for someone you can correct and put down. Hey! Everyone needs a hobby just be honest about what your hobby is. I understand not believing in God, or not believing in a particular religion. I've been on each side of the debate. What I don't understand is the puritan streak in your personal dogma. Other peoples' beliefs make you angry. You remind me of the bible-thumping street-corner preacher who is convinced that everybody is destined for Hell.
There is room enough for your beliefs and everyone else's too. Angry! No! My statement was simply my belief just exactly like the half dozen or so statements above mine. Strange that you need to ascribe some kind of "anger" in order to attack me. Why not simply say what you think instead of putting out a strawman to attack.
I truly did at the age of 7 or 8 realize that what they were saying in church was pure baloney and then I went to the logical question were they lying or not sufficiently intelligent enough to understand the facts? I concluded that they were lying. Then the question became why? Religion is a political institution and religious leaders are politicians and they are in it for the power. Just like our Democrat and Republican politicians they lie readily to acquire and maintain power. Simple as that. I did say what I think. You come off as an angry puritan who doesn't know how to deal with people whose faith leads them to different conclusions than yours does. I think it's strange, but common.
No one else here is calling you stupid or a liar because you reject religion. I reject the effort by religions to interfere with me and with our country. You will notice that it is catholic charities that is funding the illegal immigrant surge and flying these criminals into our cities and towns where they commit crimes. It is the pope asking the world to force Western democracies to take money and rights from their citizens and give that to the elite. Once a religion crosses that line and tries to exercise their political power to take citizens property and rights they have entered a different arena and deserve to be treated as the anti-Democratic, anti-citizen actors that they are. You are free to keep your head in the sand.
