Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Golden Rule

Rush played a clip today of Nancy Pelosi suggesting applying the Golden Rule to our terrorist enemies.

Thus far, she has not suggested applying the Golden Rule to fellow Americans, like Republicans, however.

Yeah, and Nancy gets it inside out.

The Golden Rule is simple;
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Nancy twists it up with some negatives:
"Do not do to others what you would not have them to to you."

These are not equivalent statements. Avoidance of negative behavior is not the same as active positive behavior.

So like the left to look at prohibition instead of enablement.

avoidance of negative behavior
is a great boon in itself.

the "do not do unto others"
is called "the Silver Rule".

would that many of the crippled do-gooders of the world
would follow it.

the discipline required to pratice the Silver Rule
(ie "self-restraint") is,imo,
a path to knowing when to practice
the Golden Rule...many are tempted to "give what they have",regardless of whether it is what is needed.

it takes wisdom to do genuine good.
good intentions are not enough,imo.
