We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Last Rose of summer

As weather gets cooler, I think today will be the last day of the year we have Rose for sunset boat drinks. I do not know how to put accents on letters, but I mean the wine.


We've done a fair bit of day touring and have learned all we can about our engine and other systems.  Still practicing docking but, as I always say, boats are not designed to be near land. Next year we will take on longer overnight trips although I will never do nighttime or fog.

Copy-and-paste works well for producing words with accent marks like rosé as well as for other things like ™ and √ and °.

Hopefully you have a good radar retroreflector on the boat for when you are away from dock at night. Most vessels large enough to do you serious damage have radar, but the return from a small boat might easily be unnoticed. Radar retroreflctors, however, work like the Botts dots on the highways. Of course, that presumes those steering the boat are looking at their screen and care. Unlike some vessels in the US navy...

I*'m in Florida and my wife doesn't like to sail in the heat of summer, so we sail in the fall, winter and spring. So, while your boating season ends, mine begins.

Plenty of snowbirds bring their boats down here for the winter, regardless of whether they are sail or power!

I used to love to sail the frostbite races in Chesapeake Bay. As long as there was wind and no ice, we were good to go.

On a Windows machine, open 'Character Map'. There, one can select a font, and all of the characters available in that font will appear on a graphical listing. You can select, and copy and paste into your note - or sometimes there are also direct keyboard shortcuts, usually using the 'Alt' key.

eg: For "é", hold down the 'Alt' key and enter '0233' on the keypad. Presto!

Then it can become a simple cheat sheet you put together.

For "°" it's Alt-248
For "½" it's Alt-171
For "¼" it's Alt-172
For "ñ" it's Alt-0241

and so on.

What I do is Google search the term with the accent and then copy paste.

Here in Canada I have the choice of an English (Canada) US keyboard or an English (Canada) Canadian Multilingual Stand... (can't see the rest) which allows me to get the French accents as required. You might wish to look into this option.

Which reminds me, very much back in the day, husband's company was promoting and facilitating purchase of IBM style computers (we already had a Commodore 64). Went down to presentation and proceeded to ask about the ability to shift from English keyboard to French one as offsprings all in French immersion. Got the "oh you just have to do this extra bit which won't happen very often" and pointed out that elephant, en françcais, was "éléphant" and their work-arounds wouldn't work. As I recall, the specs were modified so that dual language computers were available. I was obviously not the only one with that particular compaint.
