Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

What are Harbor Pilots?

If you have had experiences of big boats, you know all about harbor pilots. They are essential.


Captains know how to run ships and boats, but they do not necessarily know every harbor or port by heart.


These guys take their tough little pilot boats miles offshore in any weather. They have to be good.

I used to know a harbor pilots in San Francisco. That man knew the Bay, knew just outside the Bridge. He had to have been fearless -- I've seen videos of harbor pilots transferring to the boats the steer in. Apparently, Columbia River Bar Pilots are supposed to be the best.

Yeah, you don't want just any random ship captain playing Texas Chicken in the Houston Ship Channel. The ships run right at each other using the bow cushion to push themselves apart for passing while not getting pushed out of the channel.
