We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I just got a Roku. I didn’t really understand how it works until I plugged it in. I’m thinking I can watch just about everything xfinity offers, for about a third of the cost. I’m not sure how Roku handles sports. I like my hockey.
We moved to ME a year ago. We rented for about 7 months and had only internet and Roku. Moved into our new house and did not get cable. We have a few streaming services, BritBox and HBO Max - continued with Netflix and have Amazon Prime. We don't have any local sports but find that we don't miss it.
Monthly bill is well under half what it was with cable.
Hats off to Bari Weiss and Glenn Greenwald for opening up their substacks to facilitate publishing by other essayists - it is creating a very fertile, stable ground for the free exchange of ideas and commentary. They are walking the talk.
I had a professional society alert me yesterday that their STEM Diversity & Inclusion conference has seats available. Sad to see this. I wrote them a note to unsubscribe from all of their offerings and express my disappointment at their mission failure.
Once upon a time, professionals in the STEM fields researched and contributed to the advance of knowledge, technique, and professional accomplishment to further the discipline and improve scientific understanding as their primary goal. Now, publishing has become more of a pursuit of the credentialed careerists - to a degree. The concept is being fully turned on its head by the professional grifter class - the 'Contribution' that once was given freely in service to professional progress is now just as freely expected as entitlement, with no sense of personal accountability or contribution.
