We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

My Brown Turkey Fig

It has grown from the ground this year to 6' now, and is covered with hundreds of growing fruit. 


Try it. Even in the Northeast US the roots will survive winter. Most years, anyway. The only annoying thing about growing figs is that ants discover them when they ripen. 


Addendum: Another annoying thing - Squirrels and Chipmunks took every one of my figs.

Water and Sunlight. We moved our fig from the back yard to the side yard this spring, where there is a good bit more of both. Tried to peel up as much of the root mat as I could, and it looks like it's working out pretty well! Lots of new growth and quite a few figs.

The ants are a solvable problem, but the mice and birds.....

Update: Yes it's doing just fine, although it hasn't grown as fast as I was hoping. But it was full of figs this year. My early morning yard patrol with the dogs takes me past the bush, and I thoroughly enjoy purloining a couple each day as I passed by.

Raccoons get most of ours, but I don't mind. I'm not that fond of them.

Anything that you plant that's edible has a tendency to attract things that eat. Plant figs if you like figs - just be ready to share them.,

The squirrels and Blue Jays eat ours, just before the become ripe. DW is not amused. She has taken pulled out the old family 'Sauce Piccante ' recipe to great advantage.

In Australia, it’s currawongs and bower birds. Brushtail possums in due course.

Mine has around 10 on it per year. A late spring freeze seems to always drop whatever has started developing. I'm trying a different variety next year.

Do you do anything for it to get so many figs to ripen?

Oh, and they're small. What size are you figs? I always see these golf ball size figs on tv, but mine don't come close.
