Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

From today's Lectionary

Job 38:1-11


38:1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:


38:2 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?


38:3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.


38:4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.


38:5 Who determined its measurements--surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?


38:6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone


38:7 when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?


38:8 "Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb?--


38:9 when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band,


38:10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors,


38:11 and said, 'Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped'?

When the Lord says "Pull up your socks," he says so forcefully and eloquently. After that reading from Job, I had to go put some socks on, just to get 'em pulled up this morning.

"Words without knowledge"--just ponder the prevalence of those today, and most of them not in reference to spiritual matters.

Job is in a tremendous state of mourning and emotional turmoil, and God rubs the salt in.

But if you recall, Job was not in a state of mourning and emotional turmoil until his buddies showed up and convinced him that they understood the mind of God and God was punishing him and owed him an explanation for why he was being punished. Prior to that, Job simply accepted that he didn't know why he was being treated this way but that it wasn't his place to question the actions of the Almighty. He continued to praise the name of the Lord even after all these afflictions were visited upon him because he trusted that, even though he didn't know why these things were happening, God knew what He was doing.

One of my favorite passages from my favorite book. Who are you to question God? As I've often said, Job is simply an explication of the first commandment and its corollary: "I am God; you are not God."

And whereas Job immediately realized his mistake in daring to question God, I am afraid that there are too many people these days who would want to argue with Him, people who believe that God made some mistakes when He created the Universe and that these mistakes could easily have been rectified if only God had been smart enough to consult them before He set about the task. (I'm looking at you, Hillary Clinton, and at you, John Kerry.)
