Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Little Blues (aka Small Blues, aka Common Blues)

There are many species and subspecies of Little Blues across the northern parts of the world. They are usually about 1 cm across - tiny things. I have only seen them in groups around mud puddles or mammal droppings.


Like most butterflies, they only live a few days in their butterfly form. 


Seen any lately? You need to keep your eyes open.

Eastern Tailed-Blues are pretty common here in smother MD.

Vladimir Nabokov, the novelist, was an expert on these tiny butterflies and would spend summers in Colorado collecting and studying them. There’s even a species of them named after him. If you read his books there’s the occasional mention of blues.

We have some tiny blues in our yard. They seem to swarm around the blossoms of plants in the Portulaca family. And sometimes other weeds. Ours are not particularly blue. There is a fair amount of brown in their coloration.
