We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

All about Watermelon

The delicious and refreshing Watermelons of today have their origins in southern Africa. 


The large varieties do not work well in the northern US due to their needs for a lengthy growing season, but you can grow the smaller versions. I prefer the store-bought versions.


Althouse wrote about the American watermelon tradition, and referenced this Atlantic article about watermelon becoming a racist trope.

One rough day on a cruise I was on, had me feeling a bit queasy.

I ate some watermelon from the dining room, felt much better after that.

Maybe I just got lucky. But it might have been that it was
rehydrating, with enough fiber so not too sloshy. That's my working theory.

But, I am accepting research grants for further opportunities to investigate.

Cut it into inch thick slices and cut that up into inch square cubes. Refrigerate and eat all you want on an empty stomach when the temperature exceeds 90 degrees. It was meant to be.

Well it made it from southern Africa up to Egypt in time to be mentioned explicitly in the Israelites' complaints about hardships of the Sinai desert.
