The story doesn't describe what problems might arise with the Frankenskeeters. The modified males don't bite (no males do) - so it's not that. The descendant females die and don't breed, so it's not that. Is it the descendant males? What is this 'Dark Moment in History' that the mosquito-huggers are on about? Dengue is a regular fact of life in the southern US and Caribbean, and I know folks that have had it multiple times. Zika hits some people very hard, unpredictably. Both can have long-lasting debilitating effects. But it sounds like the protest is just anti-gentically-modified insects being released. That's not new, and there are pretty well-established control measures.

The graph at that CDC link (COVID hospitalizations) shows a very steep and dramatic drop since January for the 65+ age group, down from 0.072% to about 0.014%, a five-fold decrease.

The 18-49 group was never above above 0.01% (10/100,000) since March 2020. The line is essentially flat with mild bumps for the last 13 months.

These are “COVID19-associated” hospitalizations, as I was discussing yesterday here.
