Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Geez we're getting all the heavy hittin' unbiased serious journalists today: MSNBC, Yahoo....
QUOTE: "Americans changed sports viewing habits because of social justice" "Of those who watch sports on TV, about 11 percent said they now watch more as a result of political and social messaging. However, 34.5 percent, more than one-third, said they are watching less. The vast majority, roughly 56.3 percent, said they watch about the same amount regardless of political or social messaging." Is this an example of reverse fat-shaming here?? Funny that you'd rely on a self-reported poll to judge whether people are watching more or less sports when you've got television ratings. Why rely on what people say they do when you've got actual evidence of what they really do?
Re: Powersharing in Afghanistan
The best approach is to test both sides with concrete proposals for power-sharing. With the best of luck, they will then begin to compromise themselves, though the process may be slow. But even if that is not possible, then the reactions of the Taliban and the government will show us more about which side is trying harder for peace. What a load of nonsense. Let's suggest a power-sharing arrangement between China and Taiwan and see which side wants peace more. If you believe the other side is a bunch of thieving murderous monsters, why would you agree to a power-sharing arrangement with them? And if you're a bunch of thieving murderous monsters, why wouldn't you be eager to agree to a power-sharing arrangement? As far as I can tell, since both sides are murderous thieving monsters, it's the weaker side that is going to be more willing than the stronger side to agree to a power-sharing arrangement and the stronger side is only going to agree to it insofar as it allows them time to get their hands more firmly around the throats of their enemies. But I suppose if you can speak grandly of theories of how the world ought to work rather than how it really works and get paid handsomely to come up with such codswallop, it's a pretty sweet gig. It will never work. The British ruled the place for 100 years. You can find find photos from there in the 1950s that show a very Western society, at least on the surface. But the lesson never took. It was governed by a king for a while after they left, then slowly descended into infighting and later warfare including the Soviet invasion to prop up a Communist government. There’s no tradition of democratic values there. There is also the problem that Islam is not a religion that is compatible with democratic values. It took the English speaking people almost 800 years to establish our democratic values. Only 700 years to go.
Democracy in the land of medieval, tribal brutality: What a canard.
The Uni-party mantra is: Wars now, wars forever. Out-of-the-box thinking: Let's send all those newly-woke gender non-conforming soldiers over yonder with their politically-correct officers and let them get really woke. Who knows, they might surprise the Afghani's and convert them. The problem is Islam. Soon that problem will be here. It is rearing it's ugly head in Europe right now and our incredibly stupid politicians are acting swiftly to make sure we get to suffer from Islam sooner rather than later. Have you been paying attention to what is going on in Southern France. When I was a young man the meme was "they don't wear pants in the South of France...". Today the meme is Muslim immigrants kill Kuffar and burn their cars and trucks. Tomorrow they will slit your throat and kidnap your women. You are looking into the Abyss, WW III, Armageddon. Just a matter of time.
I would hope that at some point we will begin doing things correctly as regarding covid and future "pandemics". We did everything wrong and very little correctly. Masks are virtue signaling and perhaps a little whistling past the graveyard. Shutdowns may have some marginal effect on the spread of the disease but has had a terrible effect on our economy which has not yet been fully realized, but it will be soon. Putting people in jail and fining them for not obeying the unconstitutional edicts of left wing governors was a terrible mistake. I would hope that we remove those politicians from office and make it clear that our freedoms cannot be taken from us oon a whim.
I think also that the CDC needs a house cleaning. I'm not sure I have seen anyone from the CDC who was right on anything and worse I have seen many who were criminally wrong. I was left with the same feeling you get going to a scam auto repair shop where they lie to you about whats wrong with your car so they can rip you off. The CDC ripped us off. We would have been better off without them. Why are you putting "pandemic" in scare quotes. Do you think covid is a commie plot or some kind of global conspiracy (I wouldn't be surprised).
Covid is going to continue to burn through the population in waves, hopefully with smaller and smaller crests even with phased reopenings because of mitigation efforts and the vaccination rollout until the vaccinations and recoveries or deaths provide herd immunity. Deal with it. But in the meantime, as the online medical expert, explain why VA hospitals and every other hospital that requires mandatory universal masking for patients, visitors, vendors and staff is virtue signaling. I await your learned explanation. Don't run away. "But in the meantime, as the online medical expert, explain why VA hospitals and every other hospital that requires mandatory universal masking for patients, visitors, vendors and staff is virtue signaling."
Not necessary to explain it, only to note that it is. I've never been required to wear a mask in a hospital before last year, and the numbers say that COVID is simply not that dangerous. "Not that dangerous" plus "wear a mask or else!" is virtue-signalling. I like the way that Missouri is handling Covid. The governor has no authority to close anything down. He can only recommend. It is the mayors that can close businesses down and they have to take any grief for doing that. Where I am nothing has closed down except for one corporate restaurant that closed for a month and then reopened as all the mom and pop restaurants in the area remained open. It is left to the individual to wear a mask and only two corporate stores that I use chose to require masks in the store. I chose to do a good share of my shopping elsewhere and use the Amish stores for many things. No one seems to fear the corona and the Karens have no impact. As a side note I saw a figure of about 1800 flue cases this past season and the previous season had 38,000,000 cases. I suspect its far more profitable to the medical establishment to call the missing cases Covid.
If masks work, why the shutdown. If shutdowns work why do states that have not shut down or have mask mandates have infection rates consistent with states with strict mask mandates and shutdowns.
Let me answer. We have mask mandates and shutdowns so that the politicians don't look like they are not trying as hard as they can to do something, even if it's wrong. If you believe that your little home made mask will keep you from transmitting or catching covid you are simply ignorant. I can assure you that health care workers must wear serious PPE to prevent spread of highly infectious diseases. I didn't ask for more examples of your lame thinking.
You didn't explain why you think hospitals and doctors working in hospitals are only virtue signaling by wearing masks. Because it IS virtue signaling. Masks. Don't. Work.
Period.

As luck would have it I was in the hospital Sunday night. I am no stranger to hospitals because of my age and health. Yes they wore masks, I wore masks, they even insisted on a covid test before they would perform a procedure. SO! Why did they wear masks? Because the hospital administrators require them to wear them and follow these rules. Why do they require this? Because the Governor signed and edict requiring it. Covid is no more nor less transmissive than the yearly flu. Yet in the past visits to the emergency room or regular scheduled visits (I do a lot of both) they did not wear masks. What is different? The flu and covid are equally transmitted. People die from the flu. What is different?
Only one thing is different. The Governor signed an edict requiring masks. Nothing more, nothing less. If I had covid the mask would not have stopped it from spreading and most of your exhaled breath merely exits around your mask and what little travels through it is not filtered sufficiently to stop a tiny virus. Masks don't work. They look like they might work. They make you feel like they might work. But they do not. Everyone knows this (well not everyone, some people are simply unaware) but we require it anyway. Again; why? To make it look like the people in charge are doing something...

It's a year into this "pandemic" -- you never explained why you use scare quotes -- and the fact that I'm having to explain this to you suggests that you know this already and are making misleading arguments, about what I expect here.
Your typical mask cannot stop viral particles, nice bit of research there, Sherlock. Masks stop airborne droplets from sneezing or coughing that do carry viral particles. I cannot f'ing believe that anyone over the age of 10 doesn't understand this. A year ago it was frontline medical personnel who were asking for increased production of N95 masks because the supply was so low. The normal procedure was one mask per patient, yet they were using the same mask for days because of supply problems. How can you claim not to remember this? Were they virtue signaling then?

For the past two weeks or so it has been very hard for me to open Maggie's Farm on my machine. MF is the only website that I am having problems opening. Any ideas?
I’m not having any trouble using Safari on my iPad or Opera on my W10 desktop.
Can I install Opera and also keep Google/Safari?
Second question: I also have problems when I download Adobe Reader. It messes up everything imaginable on my machine--pops up here there anywhere. Do you have any suggestions for Adobe? Maybe it is your security settings on your browser. I am using Brave and up at the top it says sight "Maggies Farm" not secure. I would like to know how to make the site secure from all invasive eyes on my browsing habits. Clearly I am not a computer expert, just a thought.
"Right Now I'm Scared" - CDC Director Chokes Back Tears As She Fearmongers "Impending Doom": It's never to late to cry "DOOM and GLOOM" and"we're all gonna diiiiieeeeeeeee".
UK Government Minister Says People Should "Call Out" Others For Hugging Their Loved Ones: They're not already sufficiently stand-offish? Was a Trump critic's 1st Amendment violated by Yale? We're about to find out. Well, I just can't BELIEVE that Yale would have a problem with that guy criticizing TRUMP. Nearly half of Americans changed sports viewing habits because of social justice: Because it's antisocial "justice". Associated Press Says It Won’t Use “Crisis” To Describe Border Situation… As I keep saying, the "media" is in cahoots with the Dems. Did you see
covered by American news https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-03-31/asian-american-woman-assaulted-on-new-york-city-street/100039808 Terrible. Have you seen the video of a black man in NY City continuously hitting a white bicyclist in the head with a baseball bat. Much worse! Haven't seen it? That's because it doesn't fit the meme. You would be hard pressed to find that video today or any news at all about the victim or the perp. Was there a reward offered? Who knows, who cares, the victim was white. BUT if the crime fits the meme it will be shown again and again and thus multiplied until you believe that there actually is some kind of rise in hate crimes towards Asians.
Yes, you are correct about the media. However, I found this on the mainline broadcasting network for Australia. There does appear to be an increase in crime against the Asian community. After all they are the ones who out perform better than any Black in college--the old merit system. I'll bet the blacks don't beat up on the Mexicans even though they are a much more serious threat to the black community in terms of jobs. Unless, of course it drug deals gone bad! ;-)
I admit I honestly don't know if there is any increase in hate crimes towards the Asian community. Based on past experience I would say that what is really going on is massively increased MSM coverage of whatever hate crime is targeting the Asian community and does not represent an increase.
I have never agreed with "hate crime" charges. If you assault someone you should face the same charges for the same act and not greater charges because you are white. Hate crime laws are in fact a hate crime. "People Should 'Call Out' Others For Hugging Their Loved Ones"

Yale, First Amendment, Trump
If this gets tried, she'll probably lose, but they'll probably settle. The complaint doesn't read like a First Amendment issue, it's a breach of employment contract. The prof obviously violated a professional rule of conduct -- this is the Goldwater Rule barring public comments on a individual not personally examined. Professional rules of conduct would be implied into the Yale contract, but so is freedom of academic expression. Her defense is based on the CT version of the Tarasoff rule, from a CA case that imposed a duty on a psychiatrist to warn possible victims of the psych's patient, in violation of confidentiality obligations. She should lose because the CT version of Tarasoff is in a statute that permits the psych to disclose risks where, "there is substantial risk of imminent physical injury by the patient to himself or others.” The key words being "substantial," "imminent" and "physical injury." Her diagnosis is obviously bullshit in all three factors. I have a friend who has been an LA County lifeguard for decades. He's 75 y.o. now but still keeps doing it. Now I know why...
I lived in LA on the beach at Dockweiler RV park by the airport when I worked as an a/c mech and there were no lifeguards there in the winter. That's a great part time job. The year the wife and I moved there to start work we left Minnesota and the weather was California winter but I went swimming anyway. I was the only one on the beach.
Things are getting hot!
