Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re "New York Times Wonders..."
Well, once they are grilled to juicy rare perfection, my burgers are never far from extinction. re NY Times Wonders If The Burger Is Nearing Extinction
If left for the market place to decide, my reply would be, there is no chance the burger is nearing extinction. Ersatz meat loses on taste and price. However . . . . If, "in the name of climate change" of course, there is a large enough carbon tax levied on fresh meat and if that money is used to subsidize synthetic meat, making it much cheaper than real meat, yeah, it could come to dominate the market place. The global warmists have long wanted animal protein eliminated from the human menu. Perhaps the time is near when they will weaponize government to make it happen? OK, I remember Loma Linda Foods' ersatz sausages from back in the 60's; somehow they never caught on. Now all the fast food chains are cranking out faddish veggie burgers catering to the whiny little vegan squeeze hanging with some poor mook who just wants a tasty burger. I predict the fad will linger longer than the squeeze.
I have to keep wondering, though. Why aren't there carnivorous innovators designing meat based alternatives to traditional vegetable dishes? OK, charcuterie is a great salad replacment, but what about something like fake cauliflower made from ground turkey? Or jerky that maquerades as celery sticks? Huh? Closest I can think is the grade school hot lunch "mock chicken legs", which were, as I remember, equal parts ground beef, cracker crumbs, and salt. On a stick.
The reason there aren't ersatz vegetables made from meat is that one does not receive a dopamine rush from biting into a carrot. I remember Loma Linda. I had a girlfriend who loved Nuteena.
I hated it. Her entire family ate their sloppy food. But, for obvious reasons, I ate it when invited for dinner. Al Gore's Beyond Meat cartel tried the hype approach and loaded up the grocery meat sections across the country with their product. When the various crises hit (COVID panic then Freezamageddon), the shelves were bare - except for Almond milk and Beyond Meat products.
So now it's time for phase II. If the peasants wont' buy the product as instructed, then it's time to strong-arm the franchises into the game. If it works, they'll start removing menu options and replacing them. Does the tactic of eliminating your choices, whether you like it or not, sound familiar? Biden may regret letting a flood of Venezuelan refugees into the U.S. The voting patterns of the ones who've made it here so far look a lot like the ones of the Cubans who scowl and spit whenever someone says "socialism"--and they're not interested in how the NYT instructs them to think about that word.
An odd to me issue is that the Left seems to think of Latin America as a united and homogeneous entity. They do not seem to acknowledge that there are large demographic and cultural differences both among and within the various countries.
The voting patterns of the ones who've made it here so far look a lot like the ones of the Cubans who scowl and spit whenever someone says "socialism."
Actually, not so close to the Cubans. After leaving Venezuela, one will vote for Trump, the other Biden. The difference is probably that before 1959, free enterprise ruled the roost in Cuba. By contrast, Venezuela has been a Petrostate for nearly a century. The government-controlled distribution of petrodollars means that not only has BIG GOVERNMENT ruled the roost in Venezuela for generations, but the majority of the populace supports that. The anti-Chavista English language Venezuelan blogs tend to be pro-Democrat instead of pro-Rebpulican. The proprietor of Venezuela News and Views, who got a STEM doctorate in the US, has time and again opined about his support of Democrat candidates in the US. Nonetheless, his pro-Democrat stance hasn't stopped him from criticizing Obama and even grudgingly praised Trump for their policies on Venezuela. Caracas Chronicles, on the other hand, is ORANGE TRUMP BAD, all the time. From the pen of Francisco Toro, the founder of Caracas Chronicles.Trump = Chávez - Impulse Control. But as he went to Reed, what can you expect? While Francisco "Quico" Toro doesn't like Trump, he also disliked Fidel Castro. The Worst Latin American
QUOTE: Has any other Latin American done as much damage in a single lifetime as Fidel Castro? It's...not even close. Venezuela also was the home of a number of refugees from Castro's Cuba. In Maracaibo, I knew a young woman whose father, the owner of a cement factory, had fled Castro's Cuba.Further evidence of Francisco "Quico" Toro's case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. QUOTE: I don’t think the U.S. can have a stable political system until sensible right-wingers stop shirking blame and start taking stock of the authoritarian nightmare their movement is on the cusp of imposing on the country. That's not a quote that has aged very well.Biden is clueless. But there is a cabal of people in his administration that hate middle America and want to see them get their comeuppance. They want to dilute America, replace voters and workers and remove our constitutional freedoms. The left has morphed into full on communists and they can no longer be trusted with power. Their hate of the right exceeds their love of country and they intend to destroy both the right and the country. They will do this easily by bringing in massive amounts of immigrants and promising them free stuff if they continue to vote them into office. It is a perfect plan that cannot end peacefully. Most of the right, the silent majority, are sleep walking through life and don't yet realize what is happening. Soon the hate from the left will affect their everyday life and the streets will be unsafe for them and their children and they will be jerked into reality. This will not end well.
Open borders: A minority caller to WIND in Chicago pointed out that open borders ensure a continuous flow of migrants carrying covid and variants into the USA, so IOW covid never ends.
Re:Russiagate indictments
I love John Solomon. He’s one of the few decent reporters out there, but I’ve been waiting in vain for some justice to happen out of that situation for four years. I have no interest in his telling me that he expects indictments to come in 6 - 8 weeks. I am only interested in his announcing that indictments have been handed down. I'm not holding my breath either.
Not with the current crop of miscreants in the DOJ. Complex NumbersYou can't solve many engineering problems without complex numbers - especially in electrical engineering. So I guess I'm in the "They're a tool" camp. Like the sound of one hand clapping...
NY Times Wonders If The Burger Is Nearing ExtinctionI think it's the Times that's on the brink of extinction.
And when its final print run at last occurs, I say we celebrate with a BBQ - burgers and beer all round!
Gasoline has gone up 65 cents/gallon in my area since Biden was inaugurated. Why?
I have always wanted to believe gas price fluctuations were the result of supply and demand shifts. If so, what fundamentally changed in supply/demand fundamentals with Biden coming to office? There have been no new wars or terrorists attacks, there have been some refinery disruptions due to the cold and I am sure a spike in heating fuel demand, but has that affected the price to this extent? Has demand for gasoline suddenly jumped? I have increasingly come to the conclusion that the price increase is the result of Biden coming to office. After all, if Big Tech can do Government's bidding, why not Big Oil? Perhaps for no other reason than keeping the regulatory apparatus off their backs? We all know that people in the Biden administration want gasoline prices in the stratosphere to make electric cars look better. The sky high price also punishes the red states. The I came across this the other day: Former Shell Oil president: Biden's policies are responsible for skyrocketing gas prices https://www.theblaze.com/news/former-oil-exec-biden-policies-skyrocketing-gas-prices Is the former Shell president correct, or is it a partisan shot? By Spring gasoline prices will have gone up about $1.50 and by August perhaps another $.50. Some of this will be taxes I suspect but most of it will be engineered by government and the elite. Surprisingly I don't blame big oil, I think they are pawns in this game.
Complex Numbers: I eat my Pi with "simple sauce" and a side of irrational numbers.
Democrat Lawmaker: Biden Admin ‘Purposely Withholding’ Number Of Migrants ‘Being Released’ Into U.S. That boy's gonna be in a HEAP o' TROUBLE. Biden is rejecting the common-sense center on everything from schools to securing border: He got the "vaccine" when he wasn't looking.... Turner Classic Movies Denounces Classic Movies: Ted's now at 20,000 RPM in his coffin... He's also, I believe, a committed leftie and is probably onboard with the changes.
The CDC has been overcautious about everything for years. It's who they are. That should be taken into consideration about all their advice. they represent one extreme, not the judicious center.
As for the burgers, the NYT headline was "Is the Burger Nearing Extinction?" The brilliant GK Chesterton noted a century ago that if a headline is a question, the answer is "No," but they want it to be "Yes." That seems about right here. In September of 1864, at the Third Battle of Winchester, General Phil Sheridan, commander of the Army of the Shenandoah, defeated General Jubal Early. General George Custer played an important role in a massive cavalry charge that broke the left flank of Early’s army. Early had been maneuvering his army for an attack on Washington D.C. As Mr. Hanson mentions, there was hardly any troops in D.C. at that time.
Up the Potomac River, about thirty river miles form the Arlington Bridge, is Leesburg VA. There is a ferry that takes cars and foot traffic across the river to Maryland. The name of the ferry is Gen. Jubal A. Early. I wonder how many of the woke, historically ignorant, that live in that area, and use that ferry, catch the irony? Do Complex Numbers Exist?
There must be a reason for their also being called imaginary numbers. Numbers don't exist, they are imaginary markers whose definition we have agreed on. They are human constructs that make human activities and functions easier to do and easier to discuss and share. But they are so intuitive and obvious that 99% of everyone over age 6 would agree that they do in fact "exist". Complex numbers are... well, complex. If you asked 1000 random adults from middle America what they are, about 5% of the people could answer and half of them or less would be right. But they don't "exist" any more or any less than other numbers do. They are all mathematical constructs. The most interesting and useful number is zero which technically is not even a number. But if you asked 1000 random adults from middle America about all of this 95% of them would say that they give zero f*@&s about it.
Absolutely complex numbers exist or otherwise computers wouldn't be able to do complex arithnetic. FORTRAN can do complex arithmetic.
I don't usually give any thought to the royal family and I couldn't tell you any more about Meghan Markle than her name. But having read just a little of her recent interview with the richest female racist in the world my spidey senses tell me she is a lying bag of shit. Seriously, she wanted to commit suicide? Anyone buying that? No! She wanted to get attention and thus she declares that she wanted to commit suicide; a classic ploy to get attention. She Married into the "whitest" most politically correct family in the world and she "found" racism. Well DUH! She would find racism in a random garbage can. She probably wakes up every morning and her first thought is "I wonder if I can find some more racism today" This is what she does, who she is. As soon as the attention whore is no longer satisfied with the level of attention she is getting she will dump Prince Harry and... wait for it, because of racism or something. AND what do you want to bet she declares with tears in her eyes that "she wanted to commit suicide" because he treated her so badly. What are you going to do? Activists have got to "act".
Read up on Borderline Personality Disorder, which is what Diana also had. You will find yourself nodding - and perhaps think of a couple of other difficult people in your life.
As I anticipated. The Blue States were desperate to stick middle America and responsible America with the tab for their malfeasance and corruption. I believe it was a highly motivating factor in the 2020 election.
